Elmo and Dalmation Puppy Spin & Spray Sprinkler

I recently had a friend that purchased a dirt bike for his son. However, this was no ordinary dirt bike because when his son rode the bike, it barely made any noise. I was just amazed at how quiet it was and I knew that this was no ordinary dirt bike. The reason the bike was so quiet is because his son was riding an electric dirt bike. Because the electric dirt bike does not use combustible fuel in virtually makes no noise. But that is only one of the small benefits of having an electric dirt bike.

As of this moment, in the town that I live in gas prices have zoomed up to $4.15 a gallon. Now, when gas was around three dollars a gallon it still wasn't too much of the big deal for people to spend that kind of money, but now gas is over four dollars and it seems like there's no end to the fact that it will be going up more. This means that the average American will have to tighten his or her belt and pull in money from wherever they can possibly do it. There is no doubt that you will have to cut corners, was a technology that we have today, we can still enjoy many of the pleasures and hobbies we have in life. What better way to do it then by using an electric vehicle. Electric dirt bikes have all of the features and speed of a regular dirt bike that runs on gasoline but you do not have to pay a high gas prices!

As with most alternative energy vehicles, the electric dirt bike does not require many of the maintenance and repair items that you would encounter with a fossil fuel vehicle. As a matter of fact, there is no oil changes, air filter changes or any of the types of maintenance that he would find on a gas vehicle. This is one of the reasons why electric cars were very unpopular with dealerships. If anybody was happy about the electric car failing, it was the dealerships because this was a source of income that flowed into their service stations on a regular basis.

With the electric car, you have the same situation. You don't have oil changes, air filter changes in all of the other things that result from fossil fuels. The same could be said about electric dirt bike. Because of the nature of the electric motor, the electric dirt bike has very few mechanical parts that need repaired. Not to say that an electric dirt bike would not have to have regular maintenance of any type. Actually, one of the main areas of maintenance and upgrading,is in the battery department. Because of the fuel of the electric dirt bike is electricity, of course, you have two have something that will store that and delivered a regular basis to the electric motor. This requires a changing of batteries on a seasonal basis.

Now, it all depends on what type of batteries you buy for the electric dirt bike. Most electric vehicles carry the NiMH batteries that are of course rechargeable and a good recharge can take up to eight hours. If you were to ride the bike continuously for 40 minutes it would probably pretty much where the battery out. That would take you up to about 10 miles. There are more expensive batteries that you can get the can hold a better charge. If you have somebody that is very active in too riding electric dirt bikes, they can always take extra batteries with them, but these types of batteries in the size that they are are very expensive.

On most electric dirt bikes you can find anywhere from a 300 to 700 watt motor. Usually the wattage on the motor's is right around 500, but they are inventing and selling new types of electric dirt bikes almost everyday. These motors and charges can usually carry somebody around 175 lbs. As with a regular dirt bike all of the safety precautions are the same. A person should wear helmets, goggles, knee pads in all of the other things that you need to purchase two keep yourself from getting banged up.

It should be noted also, that the electric dirt bike, like the electric car and electric motorcycles are very environmental friendly, so a person that is conscious of the environment and keeping our planet green will be doing the world a lot of good by writing one of these types of electric dirt bikes. When you add up all of the things that make electric dirt bikes easier on our wallet and nicer for planet don't forget that they are just the a lot of fun too.

Sesame Street Elmo Kids Outing Snack Mini Lunch Bag

My wife, God love her, has a problem. Ordinarily, she is a wonderful woman, always kind to animals and small children, friendly with the neighbors, loved by one and all. But every Saturday morning, just after sun up, something happens to her, something horrible! She becomes an ugly, vicious, salivating, clawing thing! No, she's not a werewolf, but that's a pretty good guess. If only it were something a silver bullet could cure (or a case of Silver Bullets, for that matter).

Her problem is no mere sickness of the blood, my friends. Hers is a sickness of the mind, the spirit and the body. It's an all-encompassing affliction, kind of the same thing you'd get the morning after downing the aforementioned case of Silver Bullets, I suppose.

This curse is called...Yardsalitis! (Please imagine an ominous musical burst here)

If you laugh it's only because you haven't been exposed to this disease. Be warned, Yardsalitis is everywhere and spreading fast! There are different levels of this disease and if caught early it can be cured. To help you identify a person with Yardsalitis, let me detail the various stages for you.

First, there are the SY's (Social Yardsalers), those who only partake occasionally and usually do so with a group of their peers. These are the lightweights of the game. They do it to look cool, to fit in, not because they have an overpowering need to prowl through other people's junk.

Then come the RY's (Recreational Yardsalers). This group considers yardsaling a fun, harmless pastime. The first symptom of this stage is denial. "I ain't hurting nobody!" is the slogan of the RY's. RY's will go yardsaling if the weather's nice and they've nothing better to do on a Saturday morning. They can live without it, but they'd rather live with it.

Things begin to get ugly as the disease progresses to the next level, known as "Progressive Yardsalitis." This is the most pathetic group because they teeter on the brink of the final stage. They feel the need to get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and hit the streets, sniffing out the proverbial "good deal" like crack addicted bloodhounds. But when that high subsides and reality returns, they regret paying $200 for a Tickle-Me-Elmo that their kids aren't allowed to touch. Most have no memory of the actual purchase. They claim to just wake up with their bargain in hand.

Devastated, they vow "never again," but it's a hollow oath. Sure, there are those who can go weeks without getting a fix. But relapse is imminent. They know it, their families know it, and those cruel souls having the yardsales know it.

"We got what you need," is the mantra of the yardsale pusher.

Finally, hope is abandoned and the call of the deal must be answered. The afflicted becomes a full-fledged Yardsalaholic. This is the category my lovely wife falls into. She is the High Priestess of the Open Garage Door. She is Conan the Yardsalian!

Like a gunslinger in Dodge City, a champion yardsaler has to be quick of hand and have the peripheral vision of an iguana. And you can't be afraid to get in there and fight for what you want, either. There's more elbowing at a table covered with Beanie Babies than under the hoop at the NBA playoffs! These women are vicious, and in this scenario my wife would be Dennis Rodman.

I recently witnessed an actual yardsale. It wasn't as frightening as participating in a snake handling or going to my mother-in-law's for dinner, but it was pretty close.

This was a joint venture, make that misadventure, between my wife and sister, the Lucy and Ethel of the yardsale set. As men, I don't think we really know our wives until we see them in the yardsale setting. What I saw was educational, indeed.

What follows is an excerpt from the research paper I am writing on this experience. I'll submit the finished text to the South Hampton Institute of Technology's Hammond-Eggar Anthropological Department when it's finished. Or I may just send it to Paul Harvey, I haven't decided yet. Anyway, here's the excerpt:

"And just who are these pathetic souls who can not live without their weekly fix of mismatched Tupperware and decapitated Barbie Dolls? Usually, and this may be totally hormonal within the species, they are women. The only men present were the ones whose wives dragged them along to hold their purses while they (the women) clawed through boxes of Beanie Babies and tried on used shoes that were three sizes too small. These are the same men often seen loitering about the women's underwear section at Wal-Mart, holding purses and looking appropriately dumbfounded. Not even the prettiest of women on the pink brassiere labels can pull them from this funk.

"Scientifically speaking, this is a whole 'nother culture. People were gathering in the driveway at 6 a.m., though the signs Subjects A and B (Lucy and Ethel) plastered all over the neighborhood clearly stated that 7 a.m was the start time. It was like that movie 'Night of the Living Dead,' where the dead are stumbling across the field toward the farmhouse where the non-dead, that would be the living, are holed up. Staggering along they come, arms outstretched, fingers wiggling, a glazed look in their eyes. "Quaaaaarter," they moan. "Will you take a quarterrrrr..."
End of excerpt.
And therein lies the true art of the deal: it's not how much you spent on that Flowbee with the missing attachments, but how much you talked them down from the asking price. This is called "Yardsalanomics," a theory of economics not even Donald Trump can explain. The crux of Yardsalanomics is this: it's not how much you pay, it's how much you don't pay.

Only an idiot pays the asking price. Ask my wife.

To be fair, she is trying hard to break her addiction. She just joined the local chapter of Yardsalaholics Anonymous. YA is a "make a profit if you can" group that meets in members' garages every Saturday morning for fellowship and support. Unlike most addiction programs, however, YA has only nine steps.

It used to have twelve, but my wife talked them down.

Sesame Street Plush Mini Bag (Purse) Zoe, Elmo, Ernie, Cookie or Grouch

This is an adorable soft plush head shaped purse. Choose from Zoe, Elmo, Ernie, Cookie or Grouch. Each has a zipper closure and room inside to hold small treasures, a dual handle just right for little hands and wears a permanent smile to delight any little girl. Endorsed by Sesame Street, this is a very cute gift idea.

As a session singer myself, and former talent booking agent for the William Morris Agency, I can attest to the number of sessions that I have personally sung on where I wondered why some of the singers were even invited And yet other sessions, and the vast majority, where its a pleasure to be singing with the folks behind the mic.

I can honestly tell you that through the years of singing sessions, and Ive sung on a quite a few, from Fox TV, UPN Station IDs to OCharleys, that there are key ingredients that make up session singers in general. Session singers in the bigger picture, have a completely different role from the lead singer, yet they are tied integrally to one another. In one sense, the session singers create their own vision and picture, but ultimately they must tie directly to and enhance the lead vocal.

If you have ever had the opportunity to sing on some sessions, you will attest to the fact that regardless of the style being recorded, that back up singers and BGVs can make or break the project about as much as any other element involved. Ever listen to a song and go man is this hot, because the BGVs (background vocals) sounded so good, even though the actual song was fair to begin with. Thats what really good session singers can do for an otherwise fair to mediocre song. This is why getting into session singing in general is not the easiest thing to do as well.

Producers and writers will tell you that they have their singer rolodex and dont experiment much with newer singers. Mainly because they have been burned in the past by what was suppose to be a great singer, that actually cost them more time and money or a project that would otherwise have turned out much tighter with seasoned singers. Getting into the session singing market can take time and energy just getting the opportunity to be invited, while not even looking at the money to be made, just the opportunity.

Heres a few key elements that you will need to incorporate if you are to become a successful session singer. Many ask, What is the deal? Why cant I get any session work? And Ill tell you its just as much about attitude as it is vocal ability. Theres no question about it Your vocal ability must stand out, but so should your attitude. On the front end of this article I mentioned singers who I wondered why were ever invited to the session You know why? They had a poor attitude. Didnt want to sing it this way or that way or knew it all. They dominated the session and pulled down all of the creative elements of the group and consequently were never asked to return.

Ive been asked to sing on quite a few of Chris Hustons projects through the years. Chris Huston has recorded and been involved with Led Zeppelin, The Who, Blood Sweat & Tears, James Brown, Van Morrison, Patti La Belle, and quite honestly this impressive list could keep going. And the reason that Ive been asked, is because he likes me as an individual and I try to be easy to work with. If you will incorporate a What can I do for you mentality instead of How can you help me out, or How can I use you to where I am going, you will be one step ahead of the crowd. And seriously, so many, no matter how kind hearted they seem on the front end, have the What can you do for me attitude Just be genuine in your dealings with people and it will pay off with both loyalty and financial rewards later on.

Weve talked about attitude in terms of entering the session singing market and the other component, which is quite obvious, and that is your demo reel you are sending out. Do you know how many singers I have met with second rate demos expecting to gain session work? - Too many. Do you have individuals with an honest ear listening to your demos, or just those who will tell you how great it sounds, not wanting to hurt your feelings, listen to your demos? Make sure you have honest ears listening to your demos. At the same time, understand that, just like everyone is an expert on resumes and by sending out ten resumes to ten different people you will get ten different suggestions on needed changes, can sometimes hold true here as well. The other component to watch out for, are individuals who dont have your best interest in mind, but theirs. They are sometimes jealous, ignorant, or have alternative motives and so you must watch out for those individuals.

Your session singing demo should consist of a variety of styles contrasting your dynamic range and scope of styles and ability. At the same time, be aware of whats you and not you and steer away from styles that you really cant pull off. Better to have less styles and consistency of quality, than to try and be all things to all people. And quite honestly, I utilize people, even to this day, who produce styles better than I on projects, so that when someone hears the project they say wow! When producers listen to your demos, they better say Now were talking, do they have anything else they can send us? Thats the response you want. Dont settle for anything less!

As you continue on in your singing careers and dreams of session work, jingle singing, or plain artist development, remember that there is room for one more singer in the crowded waiting areas of the session singing world, and you can be the one of the newest session singers with a great attitude and demo that turns the heads of all your listeners. Just keep at it. As the old saying goes, Luck comes to those who try!

Metallic Balloon - Sesame Street Big Bird / Elmo Panoramic 22"

Born November 1st, 1949, David Foster is an award winning producer, composer and musical arranger, and has won 14 Grammy awards and been nominated for 42 over the course of his career. As a member of the musical group Skylark during the 70s, Foster gained the opportunity to work closely with many high-level celebrities and musicians, including: John Lennon, Josh Groban, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Andrea Bocelli, Madonna, Gordon Lightfoot, and many, many more!

Foster was also asked to compose the score for the film St. Elmos Fire, and gained several additional hit singles off the movies soundtrack release. Through his own record label, Foster produced debut albums for several well-known musical artists who have since moved onward to very lucrative musical careers, such as: Josh Groban, The Corrs, and Michael Buble. His label is known as 143 Records.

Foster was married in 1991 to Linda Thompson, and although they are no longer together, Foster and Thompson worked together on several pieces such as the song I Have Nothing from the soundtrack to The Bodyguard in 1992. This song was nominated for both a Grammy and an Academy Award, and in 1996, Fosters composition The Power of the Dream with Kenneth Edmonds became the official theme song for that summers Olympics.

As an attempt to get into television, Foster and his two step-sons began a reality TV show called The Princes of Malibu, where Foster played himself, trying to convince his sons to shape up and make their own way in the world. The show failed, and was canceled soon after its debut. More recently, Foster was featured as a guest on the television reality show American Idol, as a mentor to competitors. He was also a judge on the show Nashville Star, as well as Celebrity Duets, a show created and produced for Fox-TV.

One of David Foster's brightest proteges is Josh Groban. See our josh groban biography.

Elmo Loves You - Party Supplies - Blowouts

Blowouts make great party favors, and guests are sure to love these Elmo Loves You blowouts.

Are you a professional waiter? I don't mean the kind that works at a restaurant getting food for people. I mean the type of person who waits for something better to happen before they can be truly happy. Do you like the way you look now or do you believe you'll look better when you fit into your pre-baby jeans again? Does your career fulfill you now or are you working a job just to get a paycheck? Have you recently taken any exciting vacations or are you waiting until your last child goes off to university?

Most moms don't live in the moment because they're so busy multitasking and rushing to fit it all in that there's too much guilt if they neglect all the other things they have to do. As a result, the great moments that are right in front of them are often missed. Half the time, moms don't even realize they're moving so quickly through the day because they're on autopilot and it just becomes part of their daily routine. It's also difficult for some moms to live in the moment when they don't exactly enjoy the moment they are in. It's hard to endlessly entertain a toddler with the attention span of a gnat!

Focusing on the future and all the things that have to get done only causes stress, anxiety and useless worry. So how can you stop to smell the roses when you don't have a second to breathe?

1. Call off the search party. Stop looking for happiness and realize it's already here. Look around you. Are you and your family healthy? Do you have the necessities of life? It's not about how much you have but the quality of what you have. It's ok to dream and work towards your goals as long as you don't get too caught up in the results.

2. Whistle while you work. Try to make all the things you have to do more enjoyable. Do you dread doing housework? Kick it up a notch and listen to your favourite music while doing your chores. If you add dancing to the mix, it'll save you from having to go to the gym. Now that's efficient!

3. Use your time wisely. When doing everyday duties like driving your kids to school, bath time or preparing dinner, take those moments to connect with your child/ren. Ask them about their day and get them to help you out. Not only will it get the job done faster, but it's a great way to bond and build their self-esteem.

4. Just be. It's more important to be present with your kids even if it's just for an hour a day than to be physically with them for 8 hours while you're engaged in other things. The next time you're "playing" with your kids, put down the phone and get down on the floor with them. Kids just want you and your attention. So stop, look and listen to them.

5. Look at life through their eyes. Kids have an incredible ability to be amazed at the simplest things. A rock, a flower, how spaghetti feels in their hands. Follow their lead and find that sense of wonder again. Stop taking things for granted and learn to appreciate the small miracles that surround you everyday.

6. Start a new tradition or ritual. Find special ways to create memories your kids will never forget. Maybe it's giving butterfly kisses before bed or making up a secret handshake that's just between the two of you. These are the memorable moments that money can't buy.

7. Remember, this too shall pass. Even though it may feel like you'll never sleep again, or you're destined to a life of changing dirty diapers, this stage won't last forever. You may be thinking "Hallelujah" now, but when your child goes to school for the first time, the tears you shed won't necessarily be of joy. Make the most of each stage when you're in it so you don't regret missing it when it's gone. And if you truly can't wait until the day when Elmo is no longer considered G-d, count your blessings, his days are numbered!

Sesame Street Talking CD Player Elmo and Cookie Player

Sesame Street Talking CD Player. Plays 12 tunes & 4 styles of music. Includes 3 AA batteries.
Customer Review: NOT a CD player!
This toy is NOT a CD player - it just plays a few canned Sesame Street songs. I was very disappointed with this item. It is misleading to refer to it as a CD player because it is not. Even if you're looking for something that just plays a few pre-recorded jingles, you can find that for far less than $32.99.

1. It is not Christmas when you want to choke the Santa in the store instead of placing your child on his lap. Do you really have to explain to him why you cannot afford half of what your child is about to ask him for?

2. It is not Christmas when you start singing Jinglehells instead of Jinglebells while Christmas caroling and it is not a mistake.

3. It is not Christmas when you make grinch Christmas cookies.

4. It is not Christmas when you place a Santa in your front yard with his pockets turned inside out.

5. It is not Christmas when you send one Christmas card out by email to be forwarded to everyone.

6. It is not Christmas when your Christmas gift to everyone is a copy of your ebook that you just cannot seem to sell.

7. It is not Christmas when instead of a live Christmas tree you have an E tree showing on your computer screen.

8. It is not Christmas when you wear a shirt proclaiming that Tickle Me Elmo doll greed killed Christmas spirit.

9. It is not Christmas when you give your dogs' new litter of puppies away as Christmas gifts.

10. It is not Christmas when you send a note out with your Christmas cards saying instead of gifts please make a donation to my astounding credit card debt.

I hope these cheered you up and got you in the mood for the Christmas season to come.
Thanks for reading.

Happy Holidays!

16" Plush Talking Elmo Loves You

This is a talking huggable Elmo. He's 16" tall. Made in 1997

Birthday parties are real big these days, but it is still quite difficult to find the right birthday party entertainer, or the special theme parties. With the right information you can be your own party planner. I will give you some birthday party ideas, kids party ideas and event entertainers. This will help you come up with a great party idea. Some people find their kids parties entertainment through party rentals companies,dj services, party planners, event planning services, and entertainment agencies. Party planning is done by wedding dj companies.

Wedding djs provide wedding music as well as entertainers, but look to pay alittle more. A wedding disc jockey is a middleman so they will add a fee, making the party entertainments cost much higher. Wedding disc jockeys usually specialize in weddings only. A cool idea is jukebox rentals, they are a great sweet 16 party idea. Party djs offer music as well but be prepared to pay more. Disc jockeys also offer dancers, party music, karaoke, party games and fun giveaways to the kids. Dj's have party favors like funny hats, blow up guitars, giant glasses, and glow necklaces.

Sometimes you can save money by providing your own party supplies. A disc jockey can also personalize your event with the music you want played. Djs work well with very large parties, some perform as live djs and are actually club djs. Some are not a mobile dj, and work the party night life. Working on location at a club, party place and catering halls. A interesting change is to hire female djs for party celebrations.

When hiring a party dj you can find a wide range of prices as well as talent. Disc jockey services should have a wide variety of music to choose from. A party disc jockey can cost as high as $8500.00, but are much more reasonable than a wedding band. Famous djs also may get a premium rate for an event. The lower price range for a disk jockey is $400.00. Top wedding bands can cost up to $10,000.00 for New York City wedding receptions. Cost will be even more If you are working with a event planner. Party bands are also fun, they play more at bars or clubs. Cover bands are great for picnics or outdoor events. When it comes to a party for kids you need to do some research. A party supply store has some interesting theme ideas for parties. You can also go online to websites for ideas on a party theme for your party celebration. You can even create a theme for your party food. Spend time on the party decorations, It will make everyone feel in the party mood. The invitations party guests receive also set the party themes. Event planners can also add a large fees for birthday entertainers. Clowns for parties are very popular, but at a children's party I find they scare some little kids. At a children's parties or birthday, clowns can keep kids busy. Some party activities a clown offers are magic, face painting, jugglers, tell jokes, stilt walkers and balloons. A bounce house is fun for a kids birthday party. Most inflatables can be rented out for the day. Hiring party characters such as Elmo are good ideas for little children. Make sure the party agency offers polaroids with the costumed character. Little girls enjoy princess parties and other themed parties.

Most children's entertainers such as clowns require a deposit to reserve a date. Party clowns for birthday parties do short parties as little as a half hour. If you would like the birthday clown to do all the activities they offer for a kid party, you'll need more time. At a kids party a clown is the best known party entertainment, but their are other good kids birthday party ideas. A party clown is a good value for most children's birthday parties and can range from $75.00 for the hour to $200.00 for the hour. Many party rental services also offer party tents as well as entertainers. Party magic is always fun. When you hire a party magician ask whether they specialize in children birthday party entertainment. Some magicians work more as corporate entertainers than at a children's birthday party. Magicians are a great idea for strolling as well, they can go table to table or do magic shows. Some party magicians are also a balloon artist. Some offer a comedy magician show. A birthday party magician specializes in younger kids, say ages 3 to 12. A magician at a birthday party will stay about half an hour to one hour. A magician for hire can run from $75.00 for the hour to $300.00 for the hour.

If your party has hundreds of guests look to hire the birthday magician for the duration of the event or think about a magic show. A singing telegram is a great party idea for older children or adults. Casino parties work well for a corporate party, christmas party and fundraisers. A stage hypnotist and a casino party can be expensive for most corporate events.

Another children party idea is a caricature artist entertainer. A caricaturist sketches quick comical portraits and makes an excellent kid birthday party entertainment. Caricatures double as a party entertainer and party favor. If you are corporate event planning a caricature artist is great entertainment. A family entertainer like a caricaturist is also fun to watch. The caricature artists sketches live at childrens birthday parties. As a corporate entertainer the caricaturists specialize in trade shows. Caricature drawings also are one of the great christmas party ideas. An interesting idea and wedding favor is a caricaturist. Wedding entertainers such as caricature artists are unique at wedding parties.

A halloween party is fun for a caricaturist to sketch your guests in their costumes. Older kids love caricatures at a graduation party. I've done many late night parties called "Project Graduation", at these events parents are the party organisers. Hiring a party entertainer for a new year's eve party can cost almost double. Other holiday parties may result in higher premiums on certain dates. Entertainers also book early for christmas parties, so consider reserving their service asap.

Elmo Loves You - Party Supplies - Stickers

Stickers make great party favors, and kids will love these colorful stickers featuring different images of Elmo.

Customer Review: A bedtime constant!
This is just the right size to love for my 2 year old. She's had it about six months and hasn't slept without it yet. Very soft!

Did you ever wonder why of all the holidays in the year, Christmas has more songs than any other holiday? And if you think you have to wait for Christmas Day or even Christmas Eve to hear all these great and not so great songs, there are radio stations all over the country that start playing Christmas songs right after Thanksgiving. Why wait?

The truth is, we can't wait for that magical time to come around when the radio stations start playing our favorite Christmas songs. There are so many of them, performed by so many artists, that you can listen for days and not hear the same song more than once.

There are songs from just about every era of music too. You've got your great Bing Crosby classic "White Christmas" from 1942 all the way to the 2005 classic "Christmas Time For The Jews" performed by Darlene Love on Saturday Night Live in one of the funniest and probably best segments they've done in many years.

Yes, the Christmas songs keep coming and coming. Every year we look forward to the new ones that come out in the hopes that a new classic will be born. But we still love the old songs, no matter how many times we hear them.

Some are very traditional and you come to expect their playing each year; songs like "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and other tunes along the lines of the ones we used to learn when we were in school. No, we weren't very hip back then and you weren't going to find any off the beaten track tunes coming up at a school Christmas concert.

But thanks to some very talented and odd people, we do have some Christmas songs that are not so traditional and also quite a few that are very strange to say the least.

Of the more talented and beautiful of these songs you need look no further than "Happy Xmas" as performed by the late John Lennon. Over 30 years after this song was recorded, a plea for peace in our world, this song is still played on radio stations all over the world.

For the more bizarre, you need look no further than "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" as recorded by Elmo and Patsy. This song become such a huge hit that they eventually made a cartoon movie out of it in the year 2000. Someday this song may fade into obscurity, but as of today it is one of the most requested Christmas songs each year.

Then of course you have your Christmas songs that you hear in Church on Christmas Even and Christmas Day service, such as "O Holy Night", "Away In A Manger", "Joy To The World", "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and of course "Silent Night", which usually concludes most Christmas Eve services as we put out our candles.

Yes, Christmas music most certainly does make the holiday season that much more special. Hopefully, as the years go by, more and more great Christmas songs will be written to help remind us what a truly magical time Christmas really is.

Happy Face Elmo school Backpack : Kid size school bag

If you're thinking it's pretty hard to chose a gift for a teen, you're right. Teens are no longer little kids who become giddy over this years' hot Elmo toy. Many gift givers worry that they don't know what is "in" for teens or feel they don't want to give teens more "plugged in" products that will enable the teen to tone out to the rest of the family. Why buy them something that will distance them from you and encourage them to hibernate inside? You don't have to. Hobby, radio controlled transportation items that travel and race by air, water and land are actually quite popular with teens and fun for families. These electronic hobby items might just be your answer. They are "high tech," so they'll meet the "cool" criteria for kids, but they also provide an opportunity to enjoy being outdoors and it is also a bobby that the families can enjoy together. (Links to specific examples at the bottom of this article). You can get these items with either gas or electronic power, and many can go as fast as 65 miles per hour. All over the country, teens are gathering at parks and fields to race and enjoy these little gadgets - and they're much safer (and more fun) than racing real cars. Some of the more popular, most sought after items are:

Racing By Air: Eflite's Blade CX2 RTF Electric Coaxial Micro Helicopter: The Blade CX2 is perhaps the most popular electric heli with a perfect 5 star rating on Amazon. It features a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSM radio control that allows you to fly it anywhere at any time without having to worry about reception - and this technology is built into the copter. The CX2 has a 4 - in -1 remote control that lets you control the copter, the gyro and the tail with unbelievable precision. The CX2s body design is awesome looking and is unlike anything else offered at the moment. It retails for about $189. See the end of this article for more info about this product.

Racing By Land: Rustler Stadium Truck RTR w/XL-5: Many feel that this is the best ready to run R/C truck that is out today. Because you can set different running modes on the engine, this model is very easy to operate for both teens and adults. This truck has a Titan 12-turn 550 motor, XL-5 ESC and Torque-Control slipper clutch. It can clock speeds at more than 35 miles per hour. Red, sleek and stylish, it has a perfect 5 star rating as well. The Rustler stadium truck runs about $159.

Racing By Sea: ThunderCat 31 RTR With .32 Marine Engine & Radio Boat: Most users who rank this boat high (5stars) note that it's durable, easy to use, and offers reliability that you would expect from it's manufacturer (Pro Boat.) The ThuderCat features handcrafted quality and Sullivan's Tiger Drive system which ensures fast, easy engine starting. It also has a Dynamite .32 marine engine which propels it's unbelievable power and speed. A radio system comes pre-installed and features servo reversing, steering and throttle adjustments. It's user friendly for both kids and adults. This items is gas powered and retails for about $349.

Aquadoodle Elmo Mat

Customer Review: Aquadoodle Mat
I bought this for my 2yr old son for his birthday. He has really enjoyed this toy. I like this toy because when he draws it only goes on the mat and not every where else. I also liked that this had a car and an Elmo stamp to go along with it, not just the pen. My oldest can draw and play with him as well. It is more for the older age then my 2 yr old, but he still has fun with it and loves to play with his older sibling. I have only owned the toy for 2 months and so far it has worked out well and has lasted. I would recommend this toy because of the different things that come with it so that other children can all play together and not just one child at at time.
Customer Review: elmo mat
my little boy loves this water mat, and i do too (no mess) its comes with a bonus stamp and little car to make it even more fun

Giving gift baskets has become a popular way of giving gifts to celebrate various holidays and special occasions. With very little expense, you can create an elaborate baby gift basket that is lovely to look at and takes very little time and effort.

The first thing you need to decide on is the size of basket that you may need. Craft stores carry all different sizes and shapes of baskets that come with or without handles. These also come in a variety of colors and styles. You might even decide to make your baby gift "basket" out of a diaper bag, a laundry basket, or some other useful item that the new mother can use later.

Once you have decided the size and style of gift basket that you wish to use, you now want to decide what the theme of your baby gift basket will be. You can choose to do a traditional basket that is pink for a girl or blue for a boy, or you may decide on a certain childhood theme, such as balloons or clowns. You can also choose a beloved character to base your basket on, such as Winnie the Pooh or Elmo. Whatever your choice is, you can purchase bows and ribbons as well as clear cellophane wrap in the particular colors that you have chosen. You can also purchase these items with designs or characters on them, depending on what your theme is.

Your next decision is to pick the gifts that you wish to include in the basket. You could concentrate on a particular area of the baby's daily needs. For example, you could make a gift basket that contains the supplies that the new mother will need to bathe her little one. Baby bathing items are inexpensive, so you should be able to pick up quite a few of these for a reasonable price. You could include baby shampoo, baby soap, baby powder, baby wash, and baby bubble bath. When purchasing these items, you should remember to read the label to ensure that the products are hypoallergenic to prevent the baby from having an allergic reaction. You could also include baby wash cloths and baby towels. These items should be made of 100% cotton to protect the new baby's soft skin. If you are focusing on a particular character, you can purchase towels and cloths that have that character on them.

You could choose gifts that deal with the baby's mealtimes. For this gift basket, you could include baby dishes, baby spoons, baby bottles, nipples, and a cereal feeder. You should make sure that these items are microwavable and dishwasher safe to ensure that the new mother can use them to the fullest. Again, if you have based your basket on a particular design or character, you can buy these items with the design or character displayed on them.

A different approach that you could take when making your baby gift basket is to buy items to help decorate the nursery if it is not yet completed. You can ask the new parents what theme they wish to base their nursery on, and then you can purchase curtains, pictures, blankets, and other nursery items that are based on that theme. The parents would probably appreciate any help that you could give them in this area.

Once you have purchased the gifts that you wish to include in your basket, you can place them neatly in your basket and wrap them with the cellophane wrap. Some people like to wrap each gift, but it is not a necessity. Finish your basket by trimming it with bows and ribbons, and you have just created your own baby gift basket.

We have baby gift baskets that are cute and practical. Perfect for the newborn and new moms. For more information, visit this article on baby gift baskets.

Elmo Big Backpacks With Wheels

Elmo Big Backpacks With Wheels . Constructed of 600 denier polyester. The dimensions are 16 inches x 12 inches x 5 inches.

Since music is my background and has been since the age of 9 and that I have been a comedian since 1980, I felt it only fitting that I do a Top 10 list of my favorite comedy songs. There have been so many novelty songs on the charts and in movies over the years and I hope I can remember all the ones that I have enjoyed. I will surely do my best to cover all of them. If I forget any of yours, let me know I and will update my list. I will just go through most of them and then put them in my list. With all that being said, here we go:

Monty Python has provided numerous songs that I have loved over the years; Sit On My Face, Brave Sir Robin, Look On The Bright Side Of Life and of course their infamous The Lumberjack Song. I also loved the theme song from their old television shows, Monty Python's Flying Circus. It was said by George Harrison that he had felt that when the Beatles broke up, Python had taken the baton, so to speak, and continued with the same aura and spirit. I agree totally. Their shows, movies and songs are classics and so was the play Spamalot, which I thought was absolutely hysterical and brilliant.

Mel Brooks has been terrific at supplying us with great comedy songs and theme songs. Blazing Saddles and I'm Tired from the movie Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety from the movie of the same name, Springtime For Hitler and Prisoners In Love from The Producers, and Putting On The Ritz from Young Frankenstein. Mr. Brooks never ceases to amaze me with his talent and sense of humor.

Ray Stevens has written and performed many, many great comedy songs throughout his illustrious career. Please Mr. Custer, The Streak, Ahab The Arab, Harry The Hairy Ape and one of my favorite titles of all time that they actually were able to fit on the label of the old 45's, Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated, Quick Dissolving, Fast Acting, Pleasant Tasting Green And Purple Pills. I am still amazed at that the record company went for that title and agreed to print it on the cover. That's a lot of extra ink per record.

Allen Sherman, in the 50's & 60's, used to do a lot of parodies of classic songs. His most famous one was Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah. It was about the tribulations of a kid at camp. Very funny and relatable for kids and adults alike.

The Playmates did a great comedy song in the 50's that got faster and faster as the tune went along called Beep Beep (Little Nash Rambler). I loved that song as a kid. It was very unique and was in the rotation on radio stations for many weeks.

Sheb Wooley had a great song in the 50's called Flying Purple People Eater. I rememebr all of the visuals that song conjured up as a young boy. I mean, how could you possibly escape from a Purple People Eater that could fly too?

Dave Seville had loads of big hits with his famous chipmunks back then. Simon, Theodore and ALVIN! "OKAAAAAY!". The Chipmunk Song and The Witchdoctor were the first songs to use the technology of raising a person's voice mechanically and making it sound like that. Dave's real name was Ross Bagdasarian and his son eventually took over the job later on.

Spike Jones was such a novelty act of his time and his songs were simply hysterical and unique sounding due to all of the sound effects they used and performed live, I might add. Cocktails For Two and You Always Hurt The One You Love were superb and always made me laugh and still do until this day.

It seems to me that the 50's was a very big era for comedy and novelty songs. I don't really know why they seemed to have disappeared over the years. They're still some but not in quite abundance as before. Maybe because the world was much more innocent back then and people aren't as easily amused these days. I don't know the reason but I think it's a shame that more aren't made today. I think people need more humor in their lives in these crazy times we live in.

So, here we go:

My Top 10 Favorite Comedy Songs 1. Springtime For Hitler

2. Sit On My Face

3. The Lumberjack Song

4. Brave Sir Robin

5. You Always Hurt The One You Love

6. Please, Mr. Custer

7. Beep Beep (Little Nash Rambler)

8. High Anxiety

9. Look On The Bright Side Of Life

10. Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah

My honorable mentions are anything by Weird Al Yankovic, He Had It Coming from the Broadway play Chicago, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer by Dr. Elmo, Hooray For Captain Spaulding from the movie Animal Crackers with the Marx Brothers and Lydia The Tatooed Lady also with the Marx Brothers from the movie At The Circus, King Tut by Steve Martin, The Chanukah Song by Adam Sandler, Rappin' Rodney by Rodney Dangerfield, Blue Christmas sung by Porky Pig, They're Coming To Take Me Away by Napoleon XIV (aka Jerry Samuels), songs by Stephen Lynch, I Can't Stop My Leg and Colonoscopy by Robert Klein, Everything by John Valby, and Whose Your Little Whosey? from The Stooge with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

If I didn't mention one of your favorites, let me know and I will add it to my honorable mentions list or update my favorite Top 10 list if I agree with it. I am sure that I have forgotten so many over the years. Until then, thanks again for reading, THE COMEDY TORNADO!

Paul Venier has been an entertainer since he was 9 years old. A musician turned comedian who has been performing live for more than 35 years. He still performs for thousands of people per week all over the country, has a CD out of Original music called 'Better Late Than Never', 3 Comedy Videos out in which sales are approaching the million unit mark and is currently working on 3 Television pilots for NBC as a writer, producer and music scorer. He is also slated to compose and score a movie that is about to go into production in the next few months called 'All My Friends Are Getting Married'. He has acted in some low-budget movies as well as a small part in 'Cadillac Man'. He was the Musical Director, Writer and Performer for the long running 'Rascal's Comedy Hour, which was largely done in the 1980's & 90's.

Recent newspaper stories have reported that the U.S. savings rate is the lowest in seventy three years, that is since 1933. Within the last twelve months, the personal savings rate has actually turned negative. The data indicates that people in the United States are not saving money. So why can't some people save more money? There are several reasons as follows and we will briefly examine each one.

1. Home Equity Loans: People see their homes or condo's as an appreciating asset and have taken money out of them against their paid principal and appreciation.

Many people see their home as a new ATM machine that they can use to make withdrawals. Some people use the money to consolidate their debt which then allows them to take on more debt. Some people use the money to remodel their existing home or buy a second home.
2. Americans are competitive and do not like to think they are falling behind their neighbors in lifestyle. For many if they see a new Ford SUV in their neighbors driveway or a new DISH satellite system or even their friend's children playing with a new Pokemon, Talking Elmo, XBOX 360, Webkinz or Harry Potter book or toy, they immediately want the product and regardless of their personal budget the product is obtained.

3. Attitude/Mentality : For many of the last seventy three years, People who experienced and lived through the Great Depression have remembered this hardship and saved money with a Depression era mentality. Time heals all wounds however, and as the generations have passed into history so has the memory of that suffering. Today, people tend to buy things because it momentarily makes them feel good.

4. Society of Consumption: This is a society of consumption, the advertisement's are everywhere to be found, Television, Billboards, Buses, Taxi's and the Internet. There is certainly no shortage of ideas or opportunities to consume goods or services. These constant images and ideas are more powerful to some people than their limiting cash flow or personal budget.

5. Employer Retirement Plans and 401k Plans: For many years this valuable savings tool required people to "opt in" to participate in Retirement Savings and in many cases the employers matched some of the savings. Because people had to "opt in" many people did not take advantage of the plans. Beginning this year with the new tax law changes, people will be enrolled automatically and will have to "opt out" of these plans not to participate.

6. Many people do not live on a budget : How many times have you heard " I live paycheck to paycheck" or " I spend it before i get it "? Many people do not live on a budget and have no idea of their personal cash flow. This results in out of control charge cards and usually debt consolidation.

To increase the savings rate, people need to budget and have better short term and long term financial plans. They need to avoid the immediate gratification of buying things to make themselves feel good or to consume to keep up with their friends and neighbors. People need to take advantage of the new tax laws to fully fund 401k or other employer retirement plans. They need to stop "spending money before they get it" and to show fiscal discipline in our society of consumption.

Elmo Giggle and Shake Chair

Sit back and enjoy endless laughs with Elmo. The Elmo Giggle & Shake Chair is more than just a place to take a load off -- it has fun and interactive features, like sound and vibration. Sit on Elmo and hear him giggle and shake. Or, open the back pocket and turn off the sound and vibration feature for quiet time.

With Elmo's 3-D facial features and outstretched arms, the Giggle & Shake Chair is a delightful sanctuary for little sitters. Includes surface-washable fabric cover. Requires 2 "C" batteries, not included. Measures 15"L x 20"W x 21"H. Holds up to 100 pounds. Assembly required.

The original " Sesame Street " is a dark and often gritty show, with mentally depressed homeless creatures like Oscar the Grouch, and poor people living in run down apartments. Heffernan (2007) writes that "These early 'Sesame Street' episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today's preschool child." The reasons forwarded that they would not suit the needs of today's children is that as gritty dark shows they do not show the happiness nor the sterile environment handed to children today, so the show was changed, giving us an Oscar who is more annoyed then upset, an overly energetic and giggly Elmo, and an overall cleaner look. This has occurred many times with many stories and art intended for children, Little Red Riding Hood is saved at the last minute, all three of the three little pigs now survive, and in general the fairy tales are so happy now that one of the most feared creatures of the past the fairy is now cute and cuddly.

Its important to understand that such fairy tales and Sesame Street sprung into being not to connect with a happy world but to connect with a sad and horrifying reality, dark and dingy ghettos where children had to talk with grouches, where people lived in run down apartments and children played in filthy streets. Just as with many of the early children's stories the purpose was both to amuse but also to help children deal with the harsh reality of life, because no matter what we do this harsh reality exists. Our stories can ignore death but life does not, children's dogs die, their grandparents will often die when they are still young, and sometimes their best friends can pass away. By sugar coating everything for them perhaps we are making them less able to deal with life later on. Just as many doctors now think that the rise in Asthma is due to the sterile environment where kids are exposed to fewer bacteria any number of problems could occur from the sterile emotional environment in which many children live.

Art for children is something intended to bring warmth, joy, love, happiness, and in many ways those artists that can bring this are some of the greatest artists. At the same time however such stories and art that exists should on occasion just as life does offer something a bit more edgy. This is because no matter how much we wish it where so not everybody can be as happy or as fulfilled as they want to be, they must be happy and must survive regardless of this however. Beyond this however many stories should as Sesame Street did and as many of the fairy tales did allow children to see joy and happiness in every situation, so that the world in which they live is not so bleak but is rather a happy place where no matter what happens people love them, and they have people to love. Where there are games and fun, success and heroics, and where there is always potential, potential to find some type of happiness and love no matter the circumstances.

Elmo's World Elmo's Fishing For Letters

Today, Norm Goldman, Editor of Sketchandtravel.com and Bookpleasures.com is
pleased to have as our guest, Tom Watson, author and freelance
photojournalist.

Tom is the author of: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Twin Cities: and The Best in Tent Camping: Minnesota:(Both published by Menasha Ridge Publishing)

Tom also is the author of How To Think Like A Survivor: A Guide For Wilderness Emergencies (coming out summer of '05, published by Creative Publishing, International)

Good day Tom and thanks for agreeing to participate in our interview.

Norm:

When did your passion for hiking and camping begin and what kept you going?

Tom:

Good day to you and thank you for this opportunity. My dad was pretty
active in the outdoors. After leaving the Navy he opened a hobby shop that
carried a lot of sporting goods. I was able, as a boy growing up in eastern
Missouri, a chance to try out all sorts of equipment - lures, rifles, bows
and arrows. Also, since my dad enjoyed camping, we took advantage of the
myriad places in Missouri to primitive camp. My cousins lived there, too,
and they were avid campers as well. So, since I was about seven, I spent a
good portion of every summer outdoors.

By the time I was thinking of college - back in the late 6O's, my folks were
divorced and I had been living with my mom during the school years. I wanted
to maintain some outdoor exposure so I decided to go into Forestry at the
University of Minnesota, on the St. Paul campus. All those factors and my
growing love of the natural sciences still keep me going to this day.

Norm:

As many of our readers are interested in romantic getaways, could you
describe eight of the most romantic and unique camping areas in Minnesota?
Why are they romantic?

Tom:

That calls upon my interpretation of both "romantic" and "unique"
campsites. I am foremost a primitive camper, minimum facilities, minimum
impact.

To me a romantic site is private, remote and amid better than
average scenery or natural attractions.

* Based on that I could list almost any campsite in the BWCA Wilderness as well as any in Voyageurs National Park - most of which are water accessible only. As far as drive-up sites, and those with a bit of walk-in access (my favorites), I have to list the following:

* Lake Maria State Park - isolated walk-in sites scattered along a hill under
a full canopy of oaks and maples - fabulous fall colors! Great hiking trail,
too!

* Great River Bluffs State Park - this part overlooks the Mississippi River
offering these incredible vistas. The overlooks are at the end of short
trails through a dense overstory of maples, very peaceful and the vistas
are breathtaking - some with very romantic perches upon which you and a
significant other could sit cozily for hours.

* Lake Elmo Regional Park Preserve. It's so close to downtown St. Paul yet it
offers remote, walk-in campsites and several miles of cross-country trails.
The campsites are along a walk-in corridor about 100 yards from the parking
area and each one is situated in deep foliage so the privacy level is quite
good, too. These are basic sites without a lot of amenities close by. These
are good sites for lounging around or taking several hikes.

* Crescent Lake Campground- This is just outside the BWCA area, in the
Superior National Forest. It's the best laid-out campground I've seen -
based on my likes. Each site is either up on a knoll or cut deep into the
woods for very private and serene settings.

* Split Rock Lighthouse State Park - One of the few really good campgrounds on
the North Shore of Lake Superior only if its not so tightly laid out as all
the others are. There are walk-in sites stretching for about miles along
the rocky shore of the lake, each separated by a forest of birch trees. The
sounds of the water against the shoreline, breezes in the trees and the
freshness of the area all combine to make a very soothing kind of camping
experience.

* Crosby-Manitou State Park - Like Lake Maria, this is solely a backpacker's
park. The sites are situated throughout the rocky banks of the river, many a
short distance from ragging waterfalls and thundering cascades.

* Very romantic in a Grizzly Adams sort of way, as are most of these.
Lake Kabetogama region of Voyageurs National Park - I couldn't resist
offering the camp sites scattered throughout this park's southern region.
Many are single campsites on small, rocky islands - no chance of
encroachment by other campers! They are all water-accessible, but what's
more romantic that a boat ride out to a private campsite surrounded by a
national park?

Many of the campground in the state forests of Minnesota - Granted some of
these are popular with horse back riders, ORV riders and fishermen, but if
you can find one not being used you can have the entire forest to yourself
with trails and rivers and lakes in abundance. These offer very few
amenities but if you are self contained and interested in romancing the day
away, you won't need any extras anyway.

Norm:

Would you recommend to honeymoon couples or couples looking for a unique
romantic adventure that they try camping, and if so, why?

Tom:

From my perspective, if a guy can find a lady who truly enjoys camping
(not parking a big RV on some flat lawn and driveway), then it won't matter
where you go. However, I think to really understand a person you need to see
how self-reliant they can be. I think camping brings out that and separates
those who need things and those who can make do without complaining. Get
those down right and the rest of it will be easy. Finding that right camping
partner may be the stepping- stone for many other successful interactions.

Norm:

Has there been any change in the popularity of camping over the past thirty
years, and if so, why?

Tom:

There has definitely been a shift in the definition. It's amazing how
many RV parks with concrete slaps and broomstick trees are listed as
"campgrounds". There are fewer and fewer places to go to actually pitch a
tent in a pristine, "campground" setting.

Our affluent society enables more to buy the bigger units, but perhaps it's more that as we grow older we still enjoy the outdoors and the "assisted camping" units help people do so.

I think the sways in the economy affect camping, too. Instead of long,
thousand mile trips for a week, families are taking shorter, weekend trips
and are going camping instead of spending more money on lodging and extra
gas. Overall I think "camping" in general is slightly more popular.

Norm:

What does travel mean to you?

Tom:

Travel means going at least 50 miles on either business or pleasure.
"Travel" as a hobby or activity, of course, conjures up images of new,
exciting or relaxing destinations. I am a naturalist, so "traveling" means
seeing and experiencing new environments, new flora and fauna, and also new
cultures and lifestyles - that's why "traveling" is such a good educational
experience.

Norm:

How do you come up with ideas for what you write? What methods do you use to
flesh out your idea to determine if it's salable?

Tom:

I try to see what's covered in the current magazines to see if I have
experienced some new areas that are timely and can be written about in an
informative and entertaining way. I love photography and usually won't even
consider a story unless I know I have good photo support for it. That is
also a good selling tool for editors. Otherwise, I look to resources on the
Internet, writing groups, etc. that will list topics of interest or announce
opportunities. Menasha Ridge already had a good base of hiking books but
needed one from Minneapolis. That's where I was living so it was a chance to
do a guide book right in my own back yard. Once you get a 'feel' for a
magazine you start to anticipate what might be salable for them.

Norm

What challenges or obstacles did you encounter while writing your books? How
did you overcome these challenges?

Tom:

Frankly the biggest challenge is always if I could cover the state or
topic thoroughly given the budget (what I'd be paid for it and the expenses
I would have to get it done), that I'd find adequate information once I
started, and most importantly, that anyone would care enough to want to read
about it. When I started the camping book I didn't know which ones I could
use and which one wouldn't measure up. I'd sometimes drive for two hours
only to find there really wasn't a campground you'd want to recommend or
that fits your criteria.

Minnesota's a big enough state that in one weekend, to cover the area I was researching, I put 1100 miles on my car - and that was out of my pocket. You overcome the hurdles by deciding that you will complete the task and you become more savvy in ways of optimizing travel and budget during the research portion.

Norm:

How have you used the Internet to boost your writing career?

Tom:

80% of my writing opportunities begin from the Internet. I belong to
the OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America). Their website offers
monthly updates from editors seeking specific topics. Other websites do the
same.

I also use the Internet to verify facts or to learn more about
something new, and check to see what's been published in the type of
magazine for which I generally write (kayaking, camping, outdoor gear,
tourism destinations, etc.).

Norm:

Who are your favorite authors, and why do they inspire you?

Tom:

As a kid Jules Verne always aroused my imagination and Sam Clemens
rekindled the kind of feelings I had growing up in Missouri (along the same
rivers, I might add). I really enjoyed the macabre of Edgar Allen Poe and
the poetry of Robert Frost, pretty mainstream writers - but all of whom
allowed my imagination to complement theirs.

Unfortunately I don't read as much as I should, so authors don't just pop
out in the conversation. I write a lot, creating my own stuff. If I had to
pick an author I've really enjoyed reading recently it would have to be
Gabriel Garcia Marquez - his collection of short stories are wonderfully
imaginative and slightly "weird".

I've always enjoyed Ray Bradbury and the Twilight Zone bunch of incredible writers. This is totally aside from the kind of writing I am doing now.guide books and magazine articles. Fiction is a much harder, higher level I hope to aspire to some day.

Norm:

As there does not seem to be any authoritative standards that exist for
guidebook authors or publishers, how do you know that a guidebook is up to
par? How do you check out the authorial competence?

Tom:

To me there are two types of "guide" books: those that are basically a
compilation of data, sometimes cleverly arranged so as to appear new and
different but basically a collection of lists off the Internet.

The other books are opinion pieces using a particular activity or skill and the
author's breadth of knowledge to know what's important, etc. I feel the
author has to first reveal him or herself, offer a profile so the reader can
say, "yes, I identify with this person so what they like I would probably
like".

In that sense I approach it from what I would consider a good
campsite or enjoyable trail. I tell the reader right up front that I am a
photographer and naturalist so I will stop and smell the roses or take a
picture, even along the most seemingly mundane of trails. I also offer a
historical perspective - most publishers want you to qualify yourself
anyway.

I grew up in Minnesota for the most part (except those summers spent
in Missouri) and was active in the Boy Scouts. I spent a lot of time
outdoors, on trails, hiking and such. I had a sense about these books before
I started my research. Another big factor, frankly, is that this is a
business, a pleasurable one, but a business. Unless you produce a product
people will buy, you won't be in the writing business for very long. It's at
least a working hobby and as such demands some discipline and fiscal
judgment.

Norm:

How do you blend your photo- journalism with your travel writing?

Tom:

People like to imagine themselves in a picture. "Wish that was me
paddling that kayak in Alaska!" A good photo draws a reader into the story-
let's them see what you are talking about.

Sometimes an editor puts such a restraint on the number of words they want. A good photo can relay needed information with very few words. I pride myself in being a good
photographer and I know that many a story was sold because there was good,
crisp, colorful support photography offered with the writing. Photos also
help me recall areas without taking a lot of notes.

I spent a full month in Peru and shot probably 30 rolls of film. I used about 8 pages of a journal - most of which was identifying some of the photo subjects I took. I then go
back and review the photos to see how many I could offer for a variety of
different story ideas. Sometimes those images even make it to the front
cover - a nice bonus!

Norm:

What is next for Tom Watson?

Tom:

I really want to pursue some fiction writing in the style of Roald
Dahl, or some of the writers camp for the old Twilight Zone series.

As far as magazines and guide- books, I will continue to look at them as those
opportunities appear. It's good income and it allows me to share some
exciting adventures with those eager to do the same. Thanks for allowing me
to share this with you.

Thanks again Tom and good luck with all of your future endeavors.
