The time will come when your teenager will want to drive further away from home. One day they will announce to you that they are planning a "road trip" with some friends. This usually occurs during the summer, but you can expect this day to come at any time of the year when there is a break from school. How you handle this request will say quite a bit about how much trust you have in your teen. Be careful when you have this discussion.
Driving is a huge responsibility that cannot be taken lightly. For your teenager it means having more independence from you and freedom that they have not experienced since learning to walk or ride a bicycle. Being prepared for this conversation will help you to forge a bond with your teen that will last a lifetime. See it as an opportunity to get closer to them and to guide them through this next phase of their life.
Find out where your teen is planning to go on this trip and who their traveling companions will be. Just listen while they give you all of the details. By the time they tell you about this they have probably been planning it for awhile, so allow them to share their excitement with you before you make any comments.
After they have told you everything about the trip, you can begin to ask some questions. These would include:
- Where will you be staying?
- How many days will you be gone?
- Do you have enough money saved to cover the cost of the trip?
- Will the other people also help you with the driving?
- Have you made arrangements for your responsibilities at home, such as your job and any school assignments?
By having an open discussion about this, your teen will see where they need to make any changes or alterations to their plans. Allowing them to come to their own conclusions assists them in maturing into responsible young adults. In the meantime, all you can do is guide them and ask them to send you a postcard from the road!
