Customer Review: My TomTom 140-S Works!
I've had the 140-S for about a month now. Until now I've just played around with it to and from work, just learning how it operates. Acouple weeks ago I had a delivery to a customer in a new housing development about 50 miles away. He was located out in the country on a new street but the TomTom took me straight to his door and then back to the office! That evening after work I drove to visit my son in Marietta/ Atlanta, Ga using the TomTom. I've been there a couple times but have had trouble finding his house both times. He lives about 25 miles off the interstate and Marietta/Atlanta can be a headache to navigate especially at night. What do you know? It worked again! Found his house in the dark! The lane assist really came in handy whenever on the Atlanta outer belt. It let me know in plenty of time whether to bear left or right before an off or on ramp. Those graphics were pretty cool. The overspeed warning was also nice. The unit was plenty loud even with the diesel engine noise. If there was a drawback it was the fact that the sun's glare off my dash made the screen difficult to see at times but it was never completely washed out. If I used it on a daily basis I would invest in one of those aftermarket sunshades. I'm a satisfied customer.
Customer Review: Tom Tom 140S
I tried two different units. The first one developed a hard looping problem that did not let the unit finish programming the route. I discovered when the second one started doing the same thing it would occur if you tried to set a route/address and you were not on a road that the unit recognizes. My driveway is ¼ mile long and runs off of a main road. If I entered an address while on my driveway it would start the looping issue until you approached the main road. My Garmin units do not have any problems in that regard. The second unit would freeze up then reboot after I started entering what Tom Tom calls itinerary / waypoints to program a route with stops that you choose yourself. This is a great feature that was one of the reasons I wanted the 140S. I really wanted to keep the second unit and downloaded all the updates etc from Tom Tom's web site; however, it still had the problem. This was after a new application and map was installed. That process took a lot of time even with a fast connection. Tom Tom's tech folks are nice but many lack the knowledge to resolve issues. Also beware that the internal memory will not allow you to install new maps that cover the same areas as originally installed. If the unit had worked I would have loved to keep it. For now I am using my wife's Garmin 205 nivi and it works without a hitch, however, it does not have the ability to do routing / itinerary like the Tom Tom does. You need to spend a lot more money to get that feature in a Garmin GPS. As usual Amazon handled the returns with no problems.

Customer Review: Magellan Maestro 4250 GPS Navigator Refurbished
I had to return the first one to Megellan for repair, they required me to ship UPS or Fed-Ex with bubble wrap and insure it for 200.00, they returned it back to me floating in a box because the unit was NOT in its bubble wrap, it was under the unit. However after the headache the new unit performs as it should. Why counldn't they get it right the first time. My recommendation, buy this unit NEW.

Now I know why this refurbished Magellan Maestro 4250 unit was returned the first time. It gets lost. It got us across town on the first real use but became disoriented nearing the target address. Finally it had us stop in front of a house over 1/2 mile from our destination and it announced we had arrived. I like my magellan gps units for hiking but back to Nuvi for the vehicles. So far, the 30 day return program seems to be easy and working fine. I am comfortable in ordering a replacement unit from Amazon.

Customer Review: Ready to pay extra for Map Updates
I bought this Costco and have used it fairly across USA and Canada. Though the product is fine there are some quirks that everyone should know about - [1] Wall Charger is not included. Unit takes around 3 hours in the car to be charged completely. [2] Updates need a full battery. Quite difficult if you dont have an AC Charger. [3] Map updates cost $79.99. [4] Non-existent Magellan customer service. [5] Slow GPS acquisition. [6] No MP3 support. This will be my last Magellan product. Period. I dont think I will ever pay to update a closed dedicated piece of hardware. A good day-to-day example would be Microsoft charging you $$$$$ to send OS updates.
Customer Review: ok, but not great.
If you want a GPS that gets you from point A to point B then this does that. But if you want a GPS that gets you from point A to point B without any issues then I would look elsewhere. It sometimes has issues where it seems to not know where it is. A few times when leaving our house it was convinced we were in a completely different state and it didn't update to our actual location until half an hour later. And it doesn't always give the best directions. A few times we have asked it directions to a place we know very well and asked for quickest route and it gave us the longest and most complex route possible. I just really expected more from it. Most times it will get you to your destination, but I find myself printing online directions as a backup, just in case. I wish we had purchased a different GPS.

This little thing is handy, and really saved me a couple of time when I got off the freeway. The problem is when I search for an address and it isn't in the list. I can browse to the location on the map but can't find it on a search. That's annoying. I would like new maps but so far there has been no response from the email address provided. I, too, was impressed by the price of this product. While I wasn't blessed with an $89 tag, $129 was far better than the $300+ the other big boys were asking. Not being at all familiar with the fancies of the more expensive models, I was thrilled for something simple. The product claims to have Alaska loaded onto the CD, and the sales guy at Office Depot assured me it was fairly simple to get it onto the little disk that inserts, but not so! It keeps telling me that there is not enough space. I've taken out everything but the english folder, and the two US maps, and even then, no room. I see now that I have to buy a far larger digital storage device and that $129 price tag is gonna cost me a bit. Let's hope that works! I also found it frustrating that there is no wall plug to charge it with, and that I can't find a way to change my "home" to my Texas address. It apparently thinks my world starts on Canal Street in New York. At any rate, it's not a bad deal for the money, but be aware that the more you pay, the more likely you are to get it ALL in one box.

Very stable. But on the first hot day, I got in the car to find the plastic disc seperated from the pad. Investigation showed that there are 4 small screws that secure the disc to the mount, which had all pulled out. I reatteched the disc with some liquid nails glue, and now it is holding up nicely.

At least in my Silverado I'd need to mount the hook or the unit will slowly slide off the dash. I just really don't care to put an adhesive hook permanently on my dash. the base is a little too rigid. If it was a bit heavier and more bean bag like, I think it would slide less. WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.

How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.

Who benefits from WAAS?
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does.

Customer Review: Excellent basic GPS if you don't need maps
This has been a solid GPS receiver for general situational awareness and logging trackpoints. After several years of pretty heavy use while hiking, walking, mountain biking, commute biking, and the occasional trip up in a model airplane, the receiver still works fine and has decent battery life. The only problem I've had with it is that sometimes the display will get corrupted on a button push and the system will require a reboot - I honestly can't tell if it's a software or hardware problem, but I've never had any trouble working around it. Even with the extension strap it was too bulky to wear on my wrist, I typically leave it attached to the top of my backpack or put it on my handlebars. Modern GPS receivers have slightly better acquisition and sensitivity, but for the kinds of things that I use this one for I have not been bothered. I handle the lack of a user-replaceable battery by adapting the charger connection to accept a standard 5V USB plug for charging; I carry a 5V-regulated USB-interface power source and can re-charge and power on the go if necessary. A GPS alone is never a sufficient plan to keep yourself found, but I've been impressed by how much you can do with just a tracklog and waypoints. I would consider carrying just a datalogger with better battery life and such but the basic interface here is just helpful enough to make it worthwhile.

The item turned out to be not what I thought it was. In the item description Not once was it put forth as a trail and hiking GPS. I bought it under the premise that we could use it for our car. The one good thing that did happen with this transaction was that I received it within 5 days, which was extremely good service.

This did not work, I activated the traffic and went on I95 and got stuck in a 5 mile traffic backup. The radio stations all had the accident but the Traffickit was saying NO INCIDENTS ON THE ROUTE!!
Customer Review: Works in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
I have been using this now for a little over a month. My only complaint may be based more on the base unit rather than the traffic kit. It does not seem to look very far ahead, so by the time it shows a traffic tie-up, I am often already in it. The suggested detours have been very handy at times. It has come up with some imaginative ways around downtown Dallas that I never would have considered before. The reason I went with this combo is that many other GPSs required compatible cell phones and none of them seemed to work with mine. While this one does require a subscription, at least I don't have to base my choice of cell phones on whether or not it will work with my GPS.

This is a great GPS unit and very accurate. I have only used it a couple of times, but am still glad I purchased it, as it will come in handy when traveling out of town.
Customer Review: Great unit...otherwise
I start by stating that the unit i am reviewing is the REFURBISHED version. While it shouldn't have been a big issue, there are significant factors to be addressed The one big reason i nicked the unit points is due to the map being outdated. You may think that you are saving money but as of early 2009, tom tom does not issue free one-time updates with refurb units, contrary to what i thought. An upgrade will run you in excess of 40 bucks, and without it, I kept missing turns and destinations that are centuries old. Second, not so big issue is bluetooth. While not a big deal to many I purposefully chose this unit over some garmins and magellans due to this. It is supposed to sync with your compatible phone and read your messges, in addition to basic call features. I was able to get it to sync only 1 in 20 times. The rest of the time, kept dropping the connection. Very annoying while driving. Lastly,was the volume. I had to have it on max to hear clearly, otherwise, you will have to turn off all the music to be able to disern whats being said. While the issues above were pretty significant, I'd like to think that it was because it was a refurb. When the features worked, they were wonderful. The voice clarity when making that single bluetooth-call was amazing, with no echoing. The text to speech functionality was great,highly recommended feature when shopping for a new unit. I also did not have an issue with the mapping software that some claim is inferior to garmins.

Customer Review: Great Improvement
I guess there is nothing else I can say but, "great improvement". I upgraded from a Garmin eTrex Legend after beating it up for about 3 years - by the way, withough a glitch. The on/off button can be a bit trying on the finger (a little too close to the antenna and hard to push down), but so far that is about the only thing I can complain about. I love that the buttons are now on the front of the receiver. I have not had a chance to really give it a workout, but I hope the quad helix antenna and sirf star chip live up to their claims.

Customer Review: Cool gadget, can't beat the Amazon price.
This Tomtom isn't an especially advanced GPS as compared to many, but it works just as it's supposed to and costs just over refurbished. I've always had great luck with refurbished electronics and this is no exception. Tomtom also has a lot of free online user map updates and other features that allow you to customize your Tomtom. The only addition that I would really like to see made available to us would be a woman's voice with a southern accent - "Tun lef jus up ahead, suga." The yank voices are difficult for us southerners to understand sometimes. We have used our new Tomtom on a couple of trips to unfamiliar cities and it has performed flawlessly. The speech technology is a vast improvement over the previous model in that now when we are in downtown areas where the streets are close together we know exactly where to turn rather than having to sometimes guess. This product would get a five-star rating, instead of four, if the Tomtom map update online service was either free or much less expensive. By my thinking (kind of like with XM radio) I would be a much more loyal customer to Tomtom in the long run if they would provide their service at a better price point. My Tomtom came to me right out of the box six quarters behind in map updates and now the company requires that I spend about 60 bucks a year to stay updated. We don't use it enough to warrant spending sixty dollars a year, but the only alternative is for it to become increasingly obsolete. All of their additional pay services seem, at least to me, to also be somewhat overpriced. As to the product itself, we love it and would definitely buy the same product again and would buy refurbished from Amazon.

The screen covers are useless since a small strip of paper remains on them in order to remove the cover. The strip covers part of the screen obstructing the view, thereby making the covers pointless because you now cannot see all of the screen.
