As a result of a twist in the opposite direction to that in which rest of their body was traveling most people at some time in their lives sprain some part of their anatomy. Painful though it may be the injury is one most occasions temporary and relief is rapidly achieved by the application of cold compresses and where possible a supporting bandage and rest.
The old favourite of wrapping layers of brown paper, well pasted with vinegar, around a badly sprained ankle ensured a rock-hard cast and almost total immobility-a novel idea for overactive children which would not only render them hors de cambat but also impose upon them a hero's status. Children in pursuit of each other, playing, leapfrog, catching a ball or turning cartwheels do mange to sprain the most amazing parts of their bodies.
Cold compresses of sweet-smelling witch hazel followed by a gentle rub with rosemary oil (see page 27) and applied sympathetic attention will usually cure the matter in minutes. On the beach a twisted ankle can be temporarily eased by a bandage of bladder wrack (seaweed). By the time the novelty has worn off the pain has usually disappeared as well. Gardeners might like to consider the countryman's remedy of fresh green cabbage leaves, rid of their thick central veins, softened and heated by blanching in boiling water, wrapped around the sprained limb.
Soothing Lotions and Oils
Tincture of amica Up to 10 drops of arnica in a cup of cold water and applied on a compress reduces swelling and brings out bruising. Do not use undiluted or on broken skin.
Comfrey lotion Steep the injured limb in a bowl of strong comfrey tea to ease the pain.
Epsom salts A bowl or bath of pleasantly warm into which has been stirred a good handful of Epsom salts in time-honoured remedy for sprains. To make it even more pleasant and effective add a good handful of thyme or pennyroyal or a few drops of the essential oil.
Rosemary, lavender, sage, thyme or marigold Up to 8 drops of any of one of these healing essential oils added to 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil and massaged into the painful area will, over a period of days, bring relief without soreness.
Garlic Pounded in olive oil, rubbed into the sprain and then covered with a warm bandage, this is an effective if malodorous healer.
Turpentine and sunflower: Two tablespoons of sunflower oil shaken in a jar with a tablespoon of oil of turpentine is and old-fashioned liniment for sprains given to me by a vet, but I can sure you that it works very well on human beings too.
Camphor rub Mix in the proportions of 1 teaspoon of oil of camphor to 1 cupful of sunflower oil. Camphor is believed to have strange powers which will send pendulums and dials haywire so be careful upon whose wrists it is rubbed.
Poacher's liniment Mix together 1 teaspoon each of wintergreen (natural wintergreen in prohibitively expensive so use the synthetic form), camphor, clove and turpentine oils with 1 cup of sunflower oil. Whilst this excellent rub may have healed sprains caused by fleeing the gamekeeper in the dark of nigh. I cannot help but feel that the same gamekeeper along with the entire poacher's intended victims would have smelt him coming from a long way off.
Poultices
Vervain or parsley Either her, macerated in hot water and placed as a warm poultice, will soothe sprains and stitches.
Hot soured mild Apply it is a poultice on warm cloth.
Onion and honey Onion, finely chopped and mixed with honey, was used to heal a multitude of hurts.
Harvester's remedy A rag soaked in cider and wrapped around the sprained limb was an easy and effective bandage for countrymen at work. Cider vinegar is equally effective.
