My personal experience leads me to think that for any given task, a customer will average about 30 minutes to make one change to their website. The reason for this? The software is so powerful, that it's hard to find the right feature.

Choosing a Presentation Remote Control

If you deliver electronic presentations using PowerPoint or other programs, you can manually move forward to the next slide with the keyboard or the mouse. One way, however, to deliver more effective presentations that improve your connection to your audience is to add a remote control to your presentation tools. What features should you look for when selecting a remote control?

Remote Features

Many projectors come standard with a remote but features vary and may not always be easy to use. A better choice is to buy your own personal presentation remote control. When evaluating a remote, look for these features and decide what is important to you:

• Ergonomic and easily fits in your hand. Keep in mind that you might be using the remote for an hour or an entire day. Plus, a smaller remote will usually have fewer and more accessible buttons, fits in your pocket, and is great for travel.
• Simple to use. In most cases, a smaller, ergonomic remote is easy to use but test it before buying. One of my friends loves her small remote which is only about the size of a matchbook. The tradeoff is she needs to press 2 buttons together to make the screen go black, a feature that does not always work. I was reminded of the importance of an easy to use remote recently when I watched an excellent presenter pull out a huge remote that looked a price scanner gun from Home Depot. As he fumbled with a large panel of buttons, the remote dropped to the floor and broke open with batteries flying across the stage.
• Transmit distance. Remotes operate with three different technologies: RF (wireless radio frequency), IR (infrared), and Bluetooth. A huge drawback with IR remotes is that you need to point the mouse directly at the receiver for it to work. Bluetooth remotes use the latest technology but currently have a maximum range of about 30' while many RF remotes have a range of 50 to 100 feet. With some remotes, you can have your back to the laptop and move to the middle of an audience. What do you need for your presentations?
• Built-in mouse. Some presenters will sacrifice a bit in size to get a built-in mouse, usually a small button like you see on some laptops. The Logitech Cordless Presenter, for example, combines a full-size mouse and remote with a 30' range and is priced under $200. Other remotes have a track ball or a touch pad. I prefer a separate wireless mouse that I use for portions of my presentations. I find a built-in mouse to be too awkward but it might be great for your purposes.
• Visible laser pointer. If you would like a built-in laser pointer, make sure to test it for visibility and practice moving it slowly. Some of the pointers have such a small laser dot that it does not show well on screen. Would an animation be a better way to highlight parts of a slide or a process?

When evaluating features, it is still not that common to find a wide range of remotes at your local computer store or office supply outlet, and so, your best option is to find someone who has a remote and try it out. My favorite is the RemotePoint Navigator from Interlink Electronics which is easy to use, fits comfortably in my hand, and gives me up to 50' of movement from my laptop. Another top model by the same company is the RemotePoint Presenter, with up to 100' of movement, a mouse button, and 32 MB of storage for your presentation; it is priced at about $150. The Phaser Mouse from IOGear is a budget-minded model for as little as $60.

There are many other models and brands to consider. Personally, I do not like remotes loaded with tons of features that you might not need; these remotes are typically bigger or more complicated to use. Remember, you should be using a remote so that you do not call attention to the technology and your audience can focus on your content.

Practicing with a Remote Control

After you buy a remote, practice with it before you use it. Do not just try it at your desk, you need to also setup your laptop and remote and actually run through your presentation. The first time I did this, the screen kept going black or I would accidentally advance to the next slide. The problem wasn't with the remote. The problem was that I was holding my presentation handout in the same hand and accidentally hitting a remote button through the handout. An easy adjustment but not obvious if my only rehearsal was in my office. I personally like to choreograph my slide actions into my presentation notes to avoiding looking back at the projection screen to check my location. Or, setup your laptop in the meeting room so you can glance at the screen and still keep the connection with your audience.

Practicing with your remote should be a built-in part of your presentation rehearsal to avoid distracting your audience and accomplishing the goal of communicating your message.

Bonus Tips: Always bring extra batteries; many speakers change out batteries for every presentation. To protect your investment, label the remote or put several business cards in the carrying case in the event that your remote is misplaced.

Creating Storyboards For Flash Animations

Why would a project manager or business analyst need to know how to create a storyboard for a Flash animation? You could argue that this is the dominion of a graphic designer or animator, and you would be right. But using storyboards is an effective method for determining the cost of an animation, and certainly budgeting considerations are a responsibility of a project manager.

To begin with, we should have some kind of definition of what a storyboard is. At the most basic level, a storyboard is a series of pictures which map out the sequence of an movie or animation. It's widely accepted that a functional specification should be produce before any coding occurs, so why wouldn't you use some form of planning process prior to creating a Flash animation?

Before you say "but I can't draw. Last time I drew a stick figure, people thought it was a potato", you need not worry. Artistic skill isn't as important as you may think, sequence is of greater significance (e.g. first, many camera flashes go off, then the limousine drives up, etc).

The format I use for a storyboard is very basic. This is intentional since it needs to be understood by both graphic designers and clients.

The structure is as follows:

Document Purpose - this is for the benefit of anyone picking up the document for the first time. It's a brief statement of what the document is about. For example; this document presents a storyboard for the animation appearing on the Blue Widgets website. The idea is to present a series of illustrations in order to help visualize the sequence of the interactive animation.

The Animation - this is where you say what is going to happen in the animation, and in what order. It's also where the 'illustration panels' appear, nothing fancy is required, its enough to put in labeled squares or circles (e.g. a circle with 'client logo' in it, the text 'tag-line', a box with 'button 1' in it, etc).

Below the illustration panel will be a series of bullet points. These describe what is happening in this particular portion of the animation. This is why you label the shapes in the panel, so you have something to refer back to, for instance; 'the client logo will fade-in gradually', or 'the bouncy ball will move across the screen from left to right'.

The bullet points are where the real detail goes, hence why artistic skills aren't such a big requirement for this style of storyboard (leave the artistic stuff to the experts). The more detail that goes in here the better. You want to make statements about what happens when the user interacts with particular elements of the animation (e.g. when the user places their mouse over the client logo, a yellow glow appears around it and a pleasant chime sound plays once). Timing, or saying how long things will go for is important here (e.g. the slogan text will fade-in over a period of 1.5 seconds). This is also a good place to specify what images, URLs or text will be used on the panel (e.g. when the user clicks the client logo, they will be taken to index.aspx).

As the saying goes, 'the devil is in the detail', and this is where the bullet points come in handy, they serve as an important tool for clarifying what the animation is really meant to be. The bullet points are designed to generate discussion (e.g. client: "we don't want a male model in our banner, our target market is female, they're the ones that tend to buy our lipstick").

Don't forget to say what the state of the animation will be when it first loads up, will there be a progress metre because the animation is expected to be large? What will the initial banner image be? Will any buttons be highlighted by default?

Appendix - this is the last section of the storyboard document. It can contain anything else which you think needs to be documented (e.g. screenshots, mockups, JPEGs to be used for reference purposes, etc). The two standard sections I place in the Appendix are: Support Files, and Technical Notes / Non-requirements. The Support Files section is actually a ZIP archive embedded within the MS Word document. The ZIP file contains any relevant graphics files intended to be used with the animation. The benefit of packaging these files together is that the most up-to-date graphics travel with the storyboard document itself. This is especially helpful when the document needs to be emailed to off-site contractors. Of course, this only works if the ZIP archive is below 2-3 MB in size.

The Technical Notes / Non-requirements section is where you say what you're not going to do. For instance; there will be no sound-effects or music used with the animation, no special effects will be used within the animation other then fade-in/fade-out, the animation will run for no longer then 30 seconds. In addition, you may want to give specific instructions which are relevant only to the Flash developer, such as: the completed animation should be no more then 1 MB in size, all text appearing in the animation should be retrieved from a XML file, etc.

A big part of creating a storyboard is helping a client translate what's in their head into something more tangible. Failing to do so could result in an iterative cycle which is not only costly, but unnecessarily time consuming.

3 Steps to Being More Expressive

That which makes the voice truly interesting to listen to is color. Color is the life, the emotion, the animation one exudes in talking, be it at the lectern, in the sales meeting, over the phone or in a one-on-one conversation. Through my many years as a voice specialist, I have discovered some very interesting correlations between the professions we choose and whether we speak with color. At the top of that list are athletes, research scientists, and CPA's who often exhibit little or no expression in their delivery. (Please understand that I am generalizing.)

Color is heard not only in the voice but is seen in one's facial expression as well as one's body language. Harrison Ford is a wonderful example of excellent facial expression, excellent body language. The tone of his voice is somewhat static - he doesn't display a lot of variety in his voice - but as an actor in the types of roles he plays, he almost doesn't need vocal variety: his face and his body display or 'speak' every emotion he is feeling.

Step 1

To see just how expressive you are (or aren't!), watch your face in a mirror and say the following statement - She said yes - as if you were delighted. Now say those words again - She said yes - as if you were disappointed. Did you notice a difference in your facial expression between delight and disappointment? If there was no difference, then you probably need some work.

Step 2

Let's work with - She said yes - again. This time when you look in the mirror, smile when you say it and nod your head up and down just a bit. (Don't overdue it.) Did you notice a difference? Now when you say - She said yes - I want you to frown and shake your head back and forth as if you were sad or disappointed. Was there a difference? If you noticed a difference, then you've just taken the 2nd step to speaking with color.

Step 3

Record yourself saying - She said yes - the first time as if you were delighted (you just found out you won the lottery) and the second time as if you were disappointed (your mother-in-law is coming to visit for 6 months). Play back the recording. You should notice quite a difference if you can 'act' in those two manners. I'm not advising you to act in normal conversation; however, expressing some emotion after finding out you just won the lottery or discovering your mother-in-law's impending visit is normal. It is natural. It is what most people do.

When I teach color I explain to my clients that I want them to straddle the fence, meaning too much color is as bad as not enough color. Sometimes a client will exaggerate his/her 'color' which is not what I'm looking for. Exaggerated color is seen on the stage. That is the only place for it. Exaggerated expression sounds ridiculous because it is inappropriate. So if you already express emotion when you speak beware that you don't go too far in improving on your delivery.

At the lectern, however, I often find that many people who are normally quite expressive have a tendency to lose their life, their color, their emotion. They are so overcome with panic and fear, that they don't allow themselves to be expressive. Their voices become flat and their faces pale as they spit out a pile of words with little or no emotion. If this sounds like you, then you need to change.

A colorful delivery of your presentation or your speech is what is going to grab and keep your audience's attention. When you can be expressive on the podium, then you are on the path to becoming a dynamic public speaker.

It used to be that animators were a rare breed. But nowadays they are springing up like mushrooms, and animation companies receive thousands of applications from highly qualified individuals every year. They're able to pick and choose from the best talents.

As somebody in the position to hire such animators, before I pop the DVD reel in, I will usually scan through the resume to see where the graduate is from. If it's a reputable academy, I am usually more icentified to look at the reel. Because we receive so many applications, sometimes it is just impossible to go through every single reel, though we try our best.

However, not everybody can afford the time or money to attend a major animation school. A good alternative to consider might be an online animation course. There are currently some online courses that have garnered a good reputation and they do add some credibility when you submit your resume. it may be worthwhile to explore these options. However, you do have to excercise caution when choosing such online courses.

The first thing you have to look at is the course outline. You have to assess your own needs versus what the course is offering. You might be competent in certain areas already and do not want to spend time going through those subject matters. In which case, you might want a curriculum which is flexible and can be molded to fit your needs. You also want a curriculum that is up to date because the animation business is fast moving, and the techniques and tools that are state of the art today will be archaic two years later.

You will also need to choose a course that will allow you to complete a show reel. A show reel is essential when you are applying for a job as it is a testimony of what you can do. Make sure the online course covers guiding you through the production of your show reel and not just leave you to do your own thing.

You might also want to see if the online animation school can arrange for internship in animation companies. Remember, you go there not just to intern and gain some experience, you are actually there to network. If you can impress the animator during your internship, it may be the ticket to getting your first job in animation.

Be very wary of schools who do not have portfolios of students to show or only showcases their teachers' works. It either means they are very new or not great at teaching. Teachers with good portfolios mean nothing if they have not exhibited the ability to impart their knowledge. There are also schools who 'borrow' portfolios from animation companies from parts of the world who seldom surf English sites. Avoid these schools like the plague! If possible, try to get details for past graduates of the course and see how they are doing now.

Last but not least, you should make sure that you are comfortable with the schedule of the course. If you can't fit into the time-table or vice versa, either work your way around it or look for another school. Nothing will break down your resolution to be an animator faster than not being able to keep up with the course.

By observing the points I have listed above, I believe that you will be able to gauge which online animation course is the right choice for you.

Watch out, parents. I am not being facetious when I say that "Coraline" should most definitely be rated R. Seriously, your kids may come away with a whole batch of persistent nightmares. They may be set up for therapy bills in later life. This is not the way kid entertainment should be.

But in its unbridled, fathomless reach into the swirling dark cauldron of the human imagination, in its super-quality visual appeal, this is an unforgettable film for adults. Yet its integity carries some question. Like, how about some attention to filling out characters and story? Like how about something we can live in, not simply be off-the-top spellbound on the outside? Would that have made its ownership of our darkest demons even greater?

Yes, it buries you in its own fancy. It jerks, jolts and immerses your eyes, not to say your mind's-eye -- all that neat stuff that spells fabulous spectacle, and with an eerie music score that will mix ice with your chills.

But inevitably it is powered almost entirely by spectacle, only incidentally by drama. It offers ultimate standards of the bizarre over dimensional characters. Weird, creepy, inventively spine-tingling, this'll haunt you for days.

No first-timer this, the story has been done as an Irish puppet show, a Swedish play, an Italian short film and a P. Craig Russell graphic novel. The world's writers and directors can see its colossal appeal at the deepest levels of the subconscious, in spots almost primal. Its addition to adult artistic understandings, to insights into the wildly free-associative expanses of all levels of consciousness is unquestionable.

The theme plays sprightly upon the age-old saying, "Be careful what you wish for. You may get it." animation to elongate his characters into skeletal spectres looming over poor Coraline.

Middle-schooler Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) has a boring life, even given her inattentive and unlikable parents who have taken her from Michigan to Oregon to their new abode, a boarding house which already houses two has-been actresss and the owner, a Russian acrobat with a rodent circus.

Coraline has abrasive attitude an makes it very obvious that she won't stand for life as it is for her. One day she finds a secret door which lead to a parallel universe. In this, she actually finds everything and everybody very similar to the dreaded world she just left, but somehow, by comparison, better in every way. Like well, it's run by a mother and father; the mother will become her "other mother," who, in striking contrast, is perky, upbeat and very caring and attentive. Or is she?

See now, the thing is that this other mother has buttons for eyes. In order for Coraline to be accepted to live there, which indeed this mother has ordained, she'll have to have buttons sewn into her own. "Soon you'll see things our way," she explains. Chilling? Only the beginning. That's only the first price of her sought-after new happiness.

Coraline's demons are just starting to surface. She's to find that this world is actually a very dangerous one, in which there are various horrors involving splatting and eating insects and outer dimensions of ghoulishness. Coraline's going to have to summon all her most creative genius to get out of this universe.

And you? You may never get out of it.

Distance Learning is Convenience Learning

When considering higher education, professional qualifications or developing new skills, lots of people automatically think of conventional learning - that is, studying at a school, university or other educational establishment. But there is an alternative: distance learning.

There are many benefits to distance learning. Some people are simply unable to attend an educational establishment during normal working hours. This might be due to family commitments such as looking after young children or caring for dependants. In many cases, jobs rule this option out. If you work for someone else, your employer will normally insist that you show up at the workplace every weekday!
