Is distance education for you? Absolutely, resoundingly YES! And now more than ever it's for anybody who wants to expand their opportunities.
Distance Learning has evolved into an over-arching term that encompasses many methods of studying and/or earning college credit. The changing definition of Distance Learning (or Distance Education) combined with society's increasing awareness of the value of continuous, independent education mean that today students in all walks of life and any stage of education can enjoy the rewards of independent study.
The most important development in Distance Learning is the ability to tailor education to the needs of each individual student. That means a college freshman can jump-start his degree (and save hundreds or even thousands of dollars) by taking a few Advanced Placement exams. It means a working mother of two can earn college credit for life experience. Or it means that armed forces personnel serving overseas can complete college courses over the internet. It means that regardless of your situation, you can find a path towards completing a degree.
The expansion of Distance Learning opportunities has changed almost aspect of education but the most important one: the determination of the individual. Distance Education offers enormous flexibility, but any program will require time and hard work (in some cases harder). Distance degree programs open doors, but they was never meant to eliminate the challenges required in any worthwhile endeavor.
Successfully completing a distance degree requires many of the same traits and skill that a traditional degree does: diligence, curiosity, as well as time managements skills. The primary differences are the location of the learning, the level of control over your class schedule, and the expanded responsibility you assume by choosing to study independently.
While there are challenges associated with earning a non-traditional degree, the advantages far outweigh the obstacles. You can study in more places and for less money than ever before. You can have a family, a career, and your education. And because you are in the driver's seat, the outcome ultimately depends on you.
