Halo Wars is a soon to be released real-time strategy video game that has been set in the fictional Halo Universe. Designed by Ensemble Studios especially for Xbox 360, the Halo Wars release date is scheduled for January 21, 2009. The game is quite similar to previous Halo games in terms of units but has a brand new control mechanism. The new units are absolutely new and you will not find any parallel with any existing RTS game.
Graeme Devine who is game's lead developer said that the emphasis in Halo Wars is more on combat rather than economy unlike the previous Halo versions. The prime agenda of the game is to make player manage the battle rather than watching it and managing economy. The resources still have an important role but there are alternate to resources like time and the number of unit present. Some campaigns will be only battle oriented but the skirmish and multi player mode will require extensive management on both ends.
First announced at X06 media briefing on September 27, 2006 the details of the game appeared on 1UP.com. The first demonstration for Halo Wars was done on Jul 10, 2007 at E3 2007 for the gaming media. Although small the demonstration generated tremendous interest and subsequently a video narrated by the lead designer of Halo Wars was released on August 27, 2007 at Xbox Live Market place.
In April 2008 Microsoft employees were seen on Xbox live playing "Halo Wars Alpha" prior to the Halo Wars release date, sparking jealousy in gaming community. With speculations rife and Halo Wars getting huge publicity Ensemble studios announced that weekly play tests were being conducted within Ensemble. The official reason was stated as to provide design and art teams with feedback.
Ensemble later confirmed that there existed a Halo War alpha version which was a tutorial and offered multiplayer version as well with limited capabilities though. Official Xbox magazine's October 2007 issue stated that there would be a playable demo before the Halo Wars release date and that it was being tested thoroughly by Ensemble employees to remove any possible bugs.
The pre rendered trailer at X06 was designed by the Blur Studio and shows a band of Warthog vehicles looking for a crew of missing soldiers. The recon patrol of the vehicles is killed by Elites who are camouflaged and who de cloak to advance in a battle that is supported by Banshees. The battle has various Covenant and Human vehicles while inculcating foot soldiers as well. The trailer ends by displaying Spartan Group Omega who are wearing their MJOLNIR armor.
Game play footage displayed at E3 was later made available online. It was narrated by Graeme Devine. The footage highlighted the game play features like controls, vehicles, special weapons, user interfaces along with other new creations. It also had an UNSC base which consisted of air base, vehicle depots and many other building that could be created in Halo Wars.
The X06 trailer was rated 25th on GameSpy's top 25 video Cinematic and IGN Xbox team rated the Halo Wars as the 7th most awaited game while the Next generation magazine ranked it 5th. PC world had some reservations that he game was not being designed by Bungie but nonetheless rates it as one of the most anticipated games.
