Pet Safety Tips For Halloween

Halloween is going to the dogs! Each year the holiday becomes more and more popular not only with adults and children, but their pets as well. Actually it's really not the pet that loves to dress up as much as it is the pet's owner that gets the final say. Who doesn't love to see a dog dressed in drag on Halloween night, but it's not for all dogs. Some pet Halloween costumes can pose safety and health hazards, so think twice before dressing up your dog. It should not constrict the pet's movement or hearing or impede his ability to breathe or bark. The costume should be flame retardant and it's important to remove any small or dangling accessories that could be chewed and swallowed. You know your pets personality, if they're happier going in their "birthday suit" than so be it.

Halloween can also be a very frightening time for pets. We've all heard of safety tips for your children, but did you know there are safety tips for your pets too? Each year veterinarians nationwide see pet injuries that could have been avoided. Here are some ways to help keep your pet safe and stress-free on Halloween:

- Find a secure place in your home to keep your dogs, especially if you're giving out candy to trick-or-treaters. Many dogs get loose when the door opens, and the presence of little (and big) costumed people often scares animals, increasing the chance dogs will run away or get hit by cars.

- Make sure your pet is wearing an up-to-date I.D. collar and tag and/or a microchip.

- If your dog has any aggressive tendencies, fear of loud noises or a habit of excessive parking, place him in a quiet room as far away from your front door as possible at least a half-hour before trick-or-treaters arrive.

- Consider crating your pet, which can make him feel more secure and reduce chances of accidental escapes. Provide chew toys, a favorite blanket, a piece of clothing with your scent on it, or whatever comforts the animal. Play soft music or a recording of soothing sounds.

- Always keep dogs and cats indoors. In addition to the parade of trick-or-treaters frightening and agitating them, there have been reports of taunting, poisonings and pet thefts.

- No tricks, no treats: That bowlful of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not your pets. Chocolate in all forms can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Chocolate contains Theobromine, which can cause nerve damage and even death in dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more concentrated it is and the smaller the lethal dose. Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous as well causing choking or intestinal obstruction if swallowed.

- Explain to your children how dangerous treats are to pets. Take the candy supply and put it somewhere out of reach of pets. Caution children about leaving candy wrappers on the floor.

- Make sure pets can't reach candles, jack-o-lanterns, decorations or ornaments.
By following these simple safety rules, your dog will be safe this Halloween.

Gift Giving Tips

When giving a gift why not take the extra time to make it really special? It is after all a reflection of you and unfortunately poor first impressions have the habit of sticking!

There are many ways in which you can take an ordinary gift and make it extraordinary but let's face facts if you really give some thought to the person for whom you are actually buying the gift for in the first place then it should not even come close to being ordinary. In other words start by purchasing an extraordinary gift and then present it in a way that makes it simply remarkable.

Now an extraordinary gift doesn't mean extravagant in cost, so please don't make the mistake of thinking that spending big dollars shows taste and thoughtfulness, because in my opinion it could not be further from the truth. Have you ever heard the saying 'It's the little things that mean a lot'?

Before even taking the first step towards the shops, Internet or to making that phone call to a Vendor, take some time to really think about the person that will be receiving your gift. Ask yourself these questions about them (remember it isn't about what you like, because the gift isn't for you!):

1. What are their hobbies/interests?
2. What do they do for a living?
3. What age are they?
4. What four words would you choose to describe their personality?
5. Do you know their favourite colour/colours?
6. How do you know them and what do they mean to you?

Write down your answers and look over them and before you know it I'm sure you will be flooded with ideas that are thoughtful and appropriate for the person to whom you are giving the gift.

Now that you are armed and ready to get that extraordinary gift, let's talk about presentation. Again you can refer to your answers of the above questions to get a picture in your mind of what kind of packaging might suit your gift. When it comes to wrapping a gift it is always fun to think a little bit outside the square and it is a good way of ensuring that your gift will be long remembered and talked about.

For instance if you had a friend that just loved cooking and spending all their spare time in the kitchen why not get them a cook book and again please remember you don't need to spend a lot of money. Some of the best cook books I have seen are from many years ago and are now out of print - eBay is a great place to find these and more often than not you can pick them up for much less than you could purchase a new cookbook and yet they are of far greater value! Back to presentation...here's the out of the ordinary part... why not wrap the book in a tea towel or even an apron? You could use the ties as the ribbon!

This is just one example of tying your theme into your wrapping and of thinking outside the square. For every gift you can purchase, there is a unique way of presenting it. 'You' just have to find it and it really isn't that hard once you have put that initial thought into it. Last but by no means least; whether you are the gift giver or receiver don't forget to give a hand written card in the way of your added message or thanks. This gives a personal touch that shows extra effort on your part and I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated.

You are ready to go and get that gift now; I would wish you luck but with all the information I have just offered you I really don't think you'll need it!

Different Ways For Kids To Make Money Regardless Of The Age

There are a number of ways for kid to make money, many times depending on the age of the kid. If the kid is a teenager, it can range from working at the mall to working as a receptionist at a salon parlor. If it is a younger kid, you have to be a little more creative. But regardless, there are a number of ways to make money as a kid.

To start with, let's discuss ways for kid to make money if under the age of thirteen. At this age, most retail stores and businesses do not hire. Typically you have to be around fourteen or fifteen to begin working at actual businesses. While this will limit your choices, it does not eliminate the possibility of working altogether.

If you live in a climate that snows during the winter, a great way to make money is by shoveling your neighbors' driveways. Is it a lot of money? It will not make the kid rich, but it will give them the necessary cash to have some fun and buy video games. Another similar option is to rake the neighbors' lawn during fall. Labor work is the best way for kids to make a decent amount of money from surrounding houses.

As soon as you become a teenager, the options expand significantly. The most obvious choices are retail or within the food industry. Retail stores can range from working inside the mall, working at a sporting goods store, or working at an entertainment store. As for the food industry there are a lot of options. This includes working fast food, working as a waiter/waitress at a restaurant, or even being a cook.

Although not the most enjoyable job option, many do not consider the possibility of door to door sales. There are several businesses and company's looking for people to sale door to door. Selling subscriptions to the newspaper can be a great way to pick up money on an incredible hourly rate. The downside is that you cannot work too many hours because you will only have success when people are home from work.

One way for kid to make money that is growing at an exponential rate is internet marketing. There are several ways kids can make money on the internet, but it is essential that the parents watch over to make sure that the kid does not fall for any scams. But there are thousands of surveys to be filled out for money, article writing directories that pay for articles and many other rather simple methods to making money.

There are tons of ways for kid to make money, but sometimes you have to be a little more clever. It typically depends on the age, but the options are there if you are willing to take the time to research and look.

Emo Hair And Fashion

Emo hair styles are strongly related to the traditional punk hairstyles from the 80s. More recently however the emo type has developed a more fixed type of view and its own fashion with it.

The emo hair styles vary everytime depending on the person wearing it. More than one factors must be taken into account; for example if someone in gothic clothes tries to pull an emo hair style, they might not be considered emo at all. Therefore, the clothing, skin piercing, tatoos and other features will also help in distinguishing between different people.

However, there are numerous characteristics that emo styles have in common:

  • Bright and deep colours, particularly brought into view by highlights or long bangs. The highlights are often in contrast with the background of the rest of the hair. Most emo girls or boys dye their hair black or a gradient of brown/ black. In some emo girls, lighter colours such as white blonde, purple and green are very common and they do look attractive indeed.

  • Emo hair styles also tend to be more loose and have no restraints. Let's take the bangs haircut for boys - in this example, the hair is simply left to model around the side of the face without any elastic bands or clips; this also stands true for girls.

  • The most important factor and one that definitely a lot of boys who want to look emo have adopted are the long/ large side bangs. These usually hide either the left or right eye and consequently cover the side of the face, while on the other side the hair is cut shorter. The direction of the hair is also towards the side with the bangs as to create a mono directional type of haircut.

  • The fourth factor on my list is a deliberately messy look! This look is always individual and therefore reflects a user personality and style! Others should never be copied no matter how good you think their emo haircuts look! Always try to impose your own emo hair style and style in general.

At the end of this article, you must also remember that being emo is not all about your hairstyle. Sure, you can have an emo hair style but you will also eventually have to change your fashion and style. Lastly, remember that it's all about having fun and showing your personality to the world!

Is the Future of Toys Looking Bleak?

Walking through any toys department or toy section of a superstore, and the one thing which is blindingly obvious is just how important technology has become as far as the popularity of toys is concerned. Shelves upon shelves of computer games scream out for attention, offering children worlds of possibilities, exciting game play, full throttle interaction, total immersion in fantasy worlds and other experiences which seem almost too good to be true.

Even taking a step away from these purely computer driven games, it seems that almost every other toy contains a microchip, for fun filled fully interactive entertainment. But do our children really need to be entertained? Or do children have not only a natural desire to entertain themselves, but actually have such a need? It's tempting to think, looking at the array of toys on offer, that computer games and technology driven toys are likely to take over a child's life, and replace their play time with entertainment time. Replacing play with entertainment is not, of course, the same thing, and creates a particular issue.

Play is fully active, the child is the centre and the driving force of the game, and the child is the one who need to use their imagination, whereas entertainment is more passive, with the child merely observing, or participating in a relatively passive way, what someone else has imagined and created. Reducing the child's active involvement, and reducing the need for them to stimulate and use their own imagination can be no good thing - but is this where we are heading, and are traditional toys set to be resigned to the history museum? Will the children of the future simply plug themselves in to play?

Certainly it is tempting to suggest such a thing, but in reality, the answer can be found very easily by watching children play. Children's basic needs are not moulded by fashion or industry. Children have a strong natural desire to play, to be in control of their own play, to create their own rules and to break the rules set for them. This is not simply a misty eyed way of looking at childhood, these needs are set in the psychological stone of thousands of years of evolution. It's the way children discover the independence, and how they makes sense of the world.

Although children enjoy playing computer games, generally this is a social thing, with them inviting friends round to play with them, as most games are multiplayer. The game then becomes not the focus, but the medium through which they play and compete. The amount of time they spend on each game is, in the vast majority of cases, actually quite limited. Even looking at the clever technological toys, such as the ones that sing, dance, tell stories and react. When the batteries are dead, the toy is often still played with, in the more traditional sense. My daughter will happily play tea time with her teddy bears and have a couple of all singing all dancing dolls sitting alongside them, remaining switched, entirely mute and enjoyed every bit as much as if they were active.

Children write the rules, and although the technology and toy industry can throw technology into the mix, it's the children who ultimately make their choices about not only what to play with, but how. Clever toys might produce an excited reaction, and receive much attention during the life of the first set of batteries, but when the batteries have dies, and the initial novelty has worn off, there will always be building blocks and crayons, which never run out, either of possibilities, or power. Powered by children's imaginations, rather than batteries, these toys are set to last forever.

Five Tips for Getting Homework Done

Now that school is back into full swing, the novelty of the new year is probably beginning to wear off. The initial ambition that your child exhibited in September may be waning and homework may have the appeal of sorting socks.

Here are five tips to help your child do homework without the battles:

1. Providing cool school supplies (pencils, erasers, folders, notepads, etc.) can motivate your child to get their work done by making the task a little less mundane. Materials kept nearby will prevent your child from becoming distracted while retrieving items they need. If your child does his homework at the table, put together a homework kit that contains the necessary items.

2. Try to have a regular time for homework. Knowing that they wont be able to play or watch TV at a certain time will be a little less disturbing than if you suddenly interrupt them while theyre in the middle of something they enjoy.

3. Let your child know you are available if they need help. Resist providing answers. Instead, show them the way to come to the correct answer.

4. Do your homework at the same time. Pay your bills, write your grocery lists, cut coupons, write letters or fill out all those permissions slips. By doing this, you are showing that homework is a part of life that everyone must do. Bonus: It can also be a silent bonding time.

5. When homework is complete, praise them for getting it done. Emphasize the fact that they can relax for the rest of the evening, knowing that theyve gotten their responsibilities out of the way.

Seven Tips to Turn Your Vacation From Good to Great

Holiday breaks are a great time for kids to experience new things, grow in new directions, and have fun with the family. With spring break and summer vacation just around the corner, have you ever wondered how you could make this your child's best vacation yet? Read the seven tips below to turn a good break into a great one!

Tip 1: Create a Road Map Together

Find out from your child what their ideal summer would look like. Their immediate response might be something like play video games all day or go to pool, but stay open to their ideas. Including them in this process is important. Hear them out and ask questions that encourage dreaming big. After listening, figure out how to create a plan that works for both of you. For example, maybe the all day of video games isn't acceptable to you, but you both agree that finding a part-time job and also having time to play games works. Get creative with this and have fun thinking of new things to do together.

Tip 2: Talk About Summer Expectations

Since schedules are often less structured during summer, it's important for both you and your child to get clear about household expectations for summer. Think about it from different perspectives from what is expected around bed time, friends, school work, activities, household chores, etc... Decide what is most important to you but also try to collaborate some with your son or daughter so they feel part of the process. For example, is there a certain bed time or curfew? Maybe there is some leeway on weekends or holidays? Are there certain rules about having friends in the house? Are there new chores for the summer? Finally, have a discussion about why certain rules are important to you and how they help make things easier or safer on everyone.

Tip 3: Monitor Internet Activities.

Internet safety and teens have received a lot of media attention lately and so many parents still feel their child is immune to any foul play. But, problems surrounding the internet can happen to anyone. Be alert to what your child is doing online. A great way to do this is to google your child's name to see what you find. You can also set up a google alert that will tell you when your child's name appears on line. To find out more about this important topic, there are many organizations online that discuss specific internet safety tips for parents.

Tip 4: Have a Blast!

Summer is supposed to be fun. Try to think of a few new things you can do as a family or your son or daughter can try on their own. Visit a new park, have a picnic dinner, go somewhere like the City Museum or Botanical Gardens and explore new sites. Ask your child for their input. You might even come up with a new tradition of pancake Saturdays or a unique game night. Have everyone make a list of the top ten fun things they want to do this summer and see if you can do at least five of them.

Tip 5: Be Familiar With Their Friends

Friendships and the social scene are a key part of a teen's every day life. Friends are usually who your child will look to for support and guidance. They are often one of the biggest influences on decisions they will make. Summer might be a time of making new friends or hanging out with old ones. Whatever the case, make sure you know what's going in their social life. If there are any drastic changes in their behavior or who they are hanging out with, this could be an indicator of serious change in their social scene for better or worse. Make sure you watch to make sure they are safe.

Tip 6: Make Learning Fun

Summer doesn't have to be a time where learning stops, but it doesn't have to be the same format as school either. Talk to your child's teacher about summer ideas to make learning fun for your child's learning style. Maybe you all read a book together or share ideas from different ones you are each reading. Other times incorporating family trips, experiences, or various types of outdoor exploration are a great way to integrate important learning skills.

Tip 7: Make a back to school plan

Just as planning for break is important so is taking a little time to plan for the return to school. This is a critical and often overlooked step. About 3-4 weeks before school starts again, start talking to your child about school. This doesn't have to be an everyday thing, but try to assess their feelings the new year. Are they going to a new school? Is it a transition to High School for the first time? Be sensitive to their anxiety levels. Think about the different ways your child will need to adapt from buying and purchasing supplies to adjusting to different sleep and wake up schedules. This is also a great time to look ahead to the new school year and think about new opportunities or goals to work towards.

Check Out these Cool Batman Gadgets

Batman is unique among other superheroes. Unlike Superman or the Flash, the dark knight does not have super powers such as super strength or super speed. He relies more on his martial arts training and cool gadgets to stop criminals in their tracks. Batman probably uses more gadgets than any other comic book superhero. Batman gadgets play a major role in revealing Batman's adventures, in the original comic strips, on cartoon series, and in feature films.

Batman gadgets have evolved through the years depending on the creativity of artist or the director of a certain batman feature. These gadgets are black and often carry the Batman logo. Batmans popularity make batman merchandise very marketable and toyshops stalls everywhere are filled with Batman action figures, vehicles, and gadgets.

The Batmobile is probably the coolest gadget in Batmans arsenal. Different design have been made but the Batmobile is usually a black high-tech, high speed car with bat like tailfins. In some episodes the Batmobile was even equipped with weapons like grenades and machine guns. Batman uses other vehicles in his crime fighting exploits like the Batboat and the Batcycle.

The Batmobile may be cool, but no other Batman gadget is more useful than the Batman Utility Belt. Its where Batman keeps his portable gadgets and tools like the deadly Batarang. The Batarang is a tailor-made boomerang type of weapon that can be modified to suit every villain. The Batrope on the other hand allows Batman to scale and swing from tall buildings.

Robin, Batmans sidekick also uses gadgets that he and Batman concocted together. They would make state of the art Batman Gadgets in the safety of the Batcave. In the Batcave they were able to devise gadgets such as the Bat Radar, Bat Cuffs, Bat Camera, and even a Bat Spray to keep sharks at bay. The Batcave also houses the BatComputer which allows Batman to solve crime and monitor crime activity in Gotham city. Batmans alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is a multimillionaire and the owner of Wayne Corp. the biggest company in Gotham city. Batman used his money to develop weapons and technology that he needs to fight villains that terrorize Gotham city.

Another reason that Batman used gadgets was his dislike of using firearms. His parents were killed by a gunman making him feel that using firearms makes him no different from them. Batman without his Batman gadgets would be a lot less exciting, crime fighting batman style would be ordinary.

Tips For Dining Out With Your Toddler

Most parents with a toddler have faced an embarrassing situation with their toddlers while in public. Dining out can sometimes be a stressful event. Before dining out with your toddler, especially if it's the first time, take some time to get prepared.

Be prepared

You know that you'll have to wait while you're in the restaurant. You wait for the server to take your order and you wait for the food to be cooked. All this waiting can make any hungry person cranky so think of how your toddler is going to feel! Bring some light snacks and small, non-invasive toys along. I always have a small baggie of Cheerios or a pack of Gerber's puffs in my daughter's bag. Only give them the snack if they are hungry and you want them to nibble. I also grab a book or something quiet that she likes to play with. This will keep your toddler occupied while you're waiting.

Check your timing

Try to dine out close to your normal lunch or dinnertime. This way, your toddler isn't cranky from needing a nap being too hungry.

Choose the right restaurant.

Try family friendly places, but try to avoid places with a lot of games. The distractions will just wind your toddler up. Once she's used to dining out, then you can head for Dave and Busters or Chuck E Cheese. Also, before you go, inquire about the restroom facilities. Try to see if there is a suitable place to change your toddler's diapers if necessary. And try to find out the peak hours. If there are a lot of patrons, your wait time will be longer.

Be sure to pack necessities

My daughter's bag is always filled with diapers, wipes, snacks, juice, water, and extra clothes. Be prepared for messes. Have a handy wipe, or a regular baby wipe, handy.

Be prepared to leave if you must

If all else fails and your toddler is disruptive, leave. Don't worry, lots of parents do it. Trying to bargain is only going to teach them that they can have their way if they throw a tantrum or misbehave. If your toddler won't calm down and you've ordered your food, ask the server to box it and head home. You can always try again another day.

Remember, they are still babies in a way and new experiences can be fun and frightening all at the same time. Take your time and be prepared before heading out. Mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of leaving if you have to. Toddlers will pick up on your feelings and can sense when you're stressed. Relax, think positive thoughts, and try to have fun.

Educational Toys That Are For Developing the Imagination

The main point to having educational toys is to develop the imagination and curiosity. Some old-fashioned items still have the capacity to learn something good, something that will help in the future. Parents control the play so that it remains on an educational course, requires greater concentration and solving problems. These problems to solve are ones that need to encourage them to use their imagination. For example, a toy that is open-ended and teaches concepts.

By developing their imagination, understand that different objects have different properties, and learn how to combine them to create other interesting objects and learning specific. Learning thru play is a reality developing on their strengths and learning style. The skills our children need to further develop and strengthen. Having endless possibilities with the play of these toys are what encourages their imagination.

By taking a closer look at learning styles early, we can help our children develop and learn through play. There is real learning experience and an environment that is fun and conducive to learning vital skills. There are combinations of fun and learning. Sensory materials, such as finger painting, are great ways to develop. This is a hands-on motor skill that gets carried through school years.

Children need a balance of toys from each of these groups to ensure their whole development. Sensory attraction and self-expression where they've reached a level of personal satisfaction. Research shows that many disabilities and learning disorders in young children can be avoided by providing them with appropriate cognitive stimulation as early as possible.

Broken Toys and What to Do About Them

To your child's dismay, a piece of their much loved toy has broken off and the fun of playing with it has decreased. To your dismay, you are going to have to either break your child's heart by throwing it out or pay money for a whole new one. What are you going to do?

Suppose you decide to get rid of the broken toy. After all, what good is it if it is broken? However, the young child will grow more emotionally involved to it once he/she learns that it is going to be thrown out. The best thing to do in that situation is to wait until the child is asleep or out of the house. Not only does that make it that much easier to discard the toy, but it may provide time for you to replace it. That is, of course, if the toy is that special to them.

This tactic would be more effective if it were carried out close to the kid's birthday or even Christmas time. If by any chance your kid does not get out much, which effects the "wait until they are gone" tactic, tell him/her that you will only get them a new toy if they give away some of their old ones first. They can then decide to give that toy to a friend if they so desire. Afterwards, when you get him/her a brand new toy for Christmas or their birthday, they will be twice as happy.

Another strategy that might be effective is storing the busted toy in a secret place for a while. If it is not missed after a long amount of time, you are free to dispose of it. Needless to say, you can't let the kid see you taking it away. This goes back to the aforementioned "wait until they are gone" tactic. He/She may go nuts trying to figure out where their toy is, but hang in there for as long as you can! Remind them that they have other toys that may "feel lonely" if not played with. That works on youngsters like a charm!

When a child's toy is broken, the "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" philosophy must come into play; if it is not seen, it is not thought about. Those were just some of the tips to keep your or any other children happy with their toys.

Garage Door Buying and Replacement Tips

Garage doors have become a popular home improvement in the last 20 years or so. It used to be that garage doors took up a lot of space, were hard to open and close, and swung outward so sufficient room was needed to open them. Replacing your garage door will not only prove to be an aesthetic improvement but will also have other benefits that come with modernization.

Most garage doors are insulated which will not only keep your garage cool in the summer and warm in the winter but also keep sound from traveling if you have a workspace in your garage. They are much more secure than they used to be. Many of them require the remote door opener (usually in your car) or pin code to open so your valuables will be safe. They can also be hooked up to your home alarm system to deter intruders.

Garage doors come in a variety of material to fit your style and budget. Wood is the traditional material of choice but there is also steel, fiberglass and other composite materials that will give you the look of other materials, e.g. wood, marble, stone, etc. Lighter material will give you the look and protection you need without the high price and the door opening mechanism doesn't have to be heavy duty.

Most garage doors nowadays are horizontal panels that slide on a track. They are tongue and groove with seals between each panel to keep out wind and rain. The mechanisms to open and close the door come with safety devices so if the door is obstructed by something, e.g. a person, box, or car, the door will stop. Some have safety devices on the panels themselves to prevent fingers or other object from getting caught between them.

If you have a workspace in your garage you will probably want some natural light. You can have clear plastic windows placed in your garage door panels. The panels are usually small and placed near the top of the garage door so as to prevent intruders.

To find the garage door that is right for you, look for a company that specializes in garage doors. Most doors have to be custom made but if you live in a track house you may be able to buy a prefabricated door and save some money. You can also buy garage doors at large home improvement store. Professionals will assist you with finding the door that fits your style and budget.

Never try to install a garage door yourself. Not only is it technically difficult but there are special tools required for the large springs and the materials are heavy. Don't penny pinch. Use a professional to ensure the job is done right.

Tips and Ideas For Painting Your Model Tank

Are you one of those people who open up a new model tank and catch yourself thinking about what you might do to make that tank a one of a kind? If you think that the decals that came with the tank are for beginners and prefer to give the model your own personal touch then you can definitely do so by applying a custom paint job. It is not hard to do so and will just take a little extra planning and preparation. The end result will be a tank that you can call your own.

Some of the techniques for painting can be a little involved but with practice it is not impossible to learn them. The first thing you must do is to decide whether you want to hand paint your model or airbrush it instead. Airbrushing can produce a great looking paint job; however, it can be hard to add specialized strokes on smaller models. If you will be painting your model a solid color then you can bet that airbrushing will do a great job.

Hand painting your model can be great for adding all sorts of small detail into your paint job. If you are painting a camouflage motif to your tanks then it may be the easiest to use since airbrushing can be very difficult without the use of many different masks. One of the drawbacks to hand painting is that you can easily get the paint too thick or too thin. It can be much harder to control the flow of it as well which can lead to runs and may require a bit of cleanup work.

No matter which technique you use it is very important to allow plenty of drying time between coats so that you get a better looking job. By painting over areas that are still somewhat tacky you can cause runs and smears in the paint job. Another important consideration is whether or not you should use primer. It is not always necessary to prime the models before you paint them but it does allow the paint to adhere much better. It can also help you to find any flaws that could be present in the models.

Before you assemble and paint your model you should clean it. Use some lukewarm soapy water but make sure that it is not too warm. If it is then it could possibly warp the plastic. By removing all the foreign materials from the model the paint will go on much more smoothly.

Tips on How to Make Your Cat's Indoor Life More Interesting

Cats that live free in the wild or anywhere spend much of every day "hunting" for food. Indoor cats have life easier......or do they? We probably need to find more creative ways to provide cats with some of the same kind of stimulation free living cats enjoy. It is very much a cat's instinct to hunt for food; however, our indoor cats usually have their food put literally at their paw-tips.

What can a cat owner do to provide the indoor cat with more food hunting stimulation?

Buy food puzzles or cat toys that allow the insertion of bits of food or treats
Special fountains make drinking water more interesting
Timed feeders allow you to vary the times at which they will dispense food for your cat

Make your own food puzzle:

Start with a clean yogurt container with a lid
Cut a small hole in the side
Make sure the edges of the hole are smooth
Put some dry cat food in the container and roll it along the floor
The cat will learn it has to continually roll the container so the food will spill out, piece by piece

You can also hide your cat's food in several locations around the house instead of putting it in one spot. It is much more entertaining for your cat if he or she has to hunt for its food every day. This helps to satisfy the cat's basic instincts of hunting for food. Don't allow your cat to see where you have hidden the food. Start with hiding small amounts of dry food under a paper cup or a plate in various locations. Another interesting option is to use an egg carton. This way the cat will have to scoop bit by bit out of the wells.

Mental stimulation using tricks:

Tricks are not just for kids! Tricks are not just for dogs! You can teach your cat tricks much in the same way dogs are trained. Many cats can be trained to fetch or perform other simple tricks using conventional training methods or clicker training. There are many books and videos to help you learn how to train your cat. Trick training will help your cat avoid boredom and also provide another way for owner and pet to interact and bond.

Socializing is another worthwhile way to spend time with your pet. What you can do:

Spend some time every day just sitting and petting your cat
Everyday, brush your cat's coat

Even though cats have the strong reputation of being solitary hunters, they are also social creatures that do indeed enjoy human company. They need attention from their owners. Studies show interaction between humans and pets helps make people healthier and calmer. Enjoy the experience. The time spent with your pet is just as therapeutic for you as for the pet.

Toys That Have Been Recalled

Toys were created to brighten the day of innocent children of all ages. As many people know, there is a vast variety of toys that these youngsters play with nowadays. However, many people also know that not every creation in the factory was kept in stores for very long. Although it is unfortunate, it is true that some toys were considered very hazardous to children. Here are some up to date occurrences of recalled toys.

In the category of learning toys, Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, NY, is voluntarily recalling about 15,000 Learning Pots & Pans Toys. Missing screws in the blue toy pan can cause the clear plastic cover to come loose and release small balls, presenting a choking hazard to young children. Another incident includes Atico International USA which has recalled about 124,000 Signature Gourmet and Crofton Personal Blenders. While placing the cup on or off the base of the blender, the blender can be turned on by accident, activating the blade. This can pose a serious laceration hazard to consumers.

Those were only a couple of examples of toys that have been recalled. In collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Earthentree of Kirkland, Wash., is now willingly recalling about 375 Wooden Toys. The recalled toys are full of small parts or can break into small parts, posing a choking hazard. The recalled rattles infringe upon the federal rattle standard. Some of the toys also have a string that is longer than 12 inches, which can become a dangerous strangulation hazard to young children under the age of 5.

Even stuffed toys are being recalled! Daiso LLC, of Burlingame, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 40 Stuffed Toy Dogs. The stuffed toys contain small parts, posing a choking hazard to young children. There sure are a lot of toys that have small parts these days. There are also some toys that can be just as dangerous as choking on those small parts. For instance, Innovage LLC, of Foothill Ranch, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 685,000 "Sky Scrambler" and "The Sharper Image" Wireless Indoor Helicopters. The rechargeable lithium ion battery inside the helicopters can overheat, catch fire, and ignite nearby combustibles, posing fire and burn hazards to not only adventurous children, but anyone who chooses to use it.

That are definitely numerous things to be aware of when purchasing toys for kids these days. Hazards are everywhere! As a parent, it is your responsibility to be cautious and keep these hazards in mind. It's for the good of your own child.

Nurturing Creativity in Your Child

One thing about our children is that each and every one of them is unique with special talent. At a very tender age, they depend on their parents for everything they need. They don't really question the decisions of the person taking care of them simply because they totally relied on those that are looking after them.

As a parent what do you really teach your children? It is ok to spoil them with birthday gifts and occasional walk in the park, but will this kind gesture help them in the latter life? Yes at the moment your children may seem and look so happy but what happen when they grow up? Would you be there to meet their every need?

Every parent would like to see their children having a fulfilled life; having the necessary skills to excel through life and become useful to the family and the community at large. The single most important question any parent needs to ask himself or herself is 'would my child be proud of me when he or she grow up?' We love our children because they are the most important thing in our life.

So it's time we start doing things differently by safeguarding their well being. One possible way we can all do this is by nurturing our children's creativity. You can start today by applying this tip.

TIP NO 1- AFFIRMATIONS

The focus here will be pulling out the brains natural abilities. This is particularly very important between the ages of zero to six years inclusive. If the right brain abilities are developed at this age, it will be with your child for the rest of his or her life. The resultant effect of this brain ability development is that your child will not suffer at all in future learning. Do this just before your child go to sleep at night and waking them up in the morning. Now let me explain one of the ways you can do this. If for instance your child has a Maths test, whisper to him or her in his or her left ear a message like ''you love Maths and will do very well in your test'' or something of the same nature. You should whisper this message for several days just when they are drowsy and just about to fall asleep. Repeat the same massage early in the morning just when they are on the verge of waking up.

It is important to note that when your child is sleepy or drowsy, his or brain is in the theta brain-wave mode. In this mode his right brain or simply creative brain is dominant. This implies that he will be much more receptive to your positive messages. Now the left ear is a much more effective pathway to the right brain and that was why I said that you should whisper in his left ear.

Dr Yew Kim Keong 'nurturing creativity expert' has put together the most practical approach to help us nurture this creativity in our young stars. I would personally refer you to his 21 tips to nurturing creativity in your child. These tips and other creative ideas are available at:

Tips For Purchasing Philatelic Material

An expertizing certificate is given to any stamp that has been submitted to an expertizing service, but only after experts have inspected it. The expertizing certificate states in printed form what their combined opinions and the established pedigree of the stamp is, which is extremely important to the collector for building an authenticity value to their collection.

Stamps should always be purchased in the best possible condition available due to value of stamps and it appreciation. Over the years it has been proven that the absolute finest stamps have increased in value. Stamps costing over a hundred dollars should always be accompanied by an expertizing certificate to show the established pedigree of stamps.

Careful examination of the stamps you purchase is highly important to help ensure that you do not purchase a stamp that has had gum added to back of a stamp. This little trick has caused even the most experienced philatelist to fall prey to this type of forgery. A magnifying glass with the ability to magnify at ten times will allow you to examine every bit of the stamps to find any flaws, gum disturbance, or any missing perforations. An ultra violet light will also help you in finding any removed cancels or flaws that can not be seen with the human eye.

A dealer or individual who is wanting to be rid of their collection of stamps or part of their collection is an opportunity for any collector to add stamps to their own collection at an attractive price. Usually, the total price of a collection or part of a collection will be much lower than buying the stamps individually.

Keeping careful records of your stamps with a complete description and any history surrounding the stamps will help with insurance purposes and increase the overall value of your collection. Also make sure to back up your records by scanning images of your collection onto your computer. These records are important to collectors who desire to a create portfolio for themselves. Your record should always include the date of purchase, purchasing price, and the individual or dealer the stamp was purchased from.

It is important to take into consideration that normal homeowners' insurance does not cover any potential losses adequately and the majority of collectors are not aware of this. This is where a specialized insurance provider that can cater to the collectible market is important. Any claim loss is based upon the actual purchasing price of a stamp.

The easiest way to store your collection is by using a stock book, which will allow you to easily move your collection. This aids in protecting your collection and in displaying them as well. When stamps are not mounted, like in a stock book, then you have the ability to sort your collection the way you desire. Stock cards also aid in storing and protecting your investment since they have clear pockets to store you stamps in. Stamps generally have to be mounted on the top of pages in an album, which can damage your collection.

Rebellion in Teenage Girls

Rebellion in girls:

Girls are milder in their form of rebellion. Their greatest worry is physical beauty. Usually, they will dress up and your corrective attempts gets you labeled as outdated! Sometimes you have to fight over the right type of male friends to keep and invite home. A lot of times you fight over your style of doing things, including your method of cooking some types of food!

You can also be really disappointed when your teenager's rebellion leads to her getting pregnant! Oh boy! Can you beat the hurt a parent can feel. Where did I go wrong? you will ask yourself.

Respect is a key word in dealing with this period of a teenagers life.

It is absolutely difficult for a parent using 'hindsight' not to envisage where a particular action may lead. The problem is how do you communicate your fears to your teenager?

If you're dealing with a rebellious teen, it is possible to demonstrate love, reason and cooperation - and to rebuild mutual trust and respect by ensuring that your communication line is kept open. You must also learn to wait patiently for the consequences of their action. Learn not to interfere. It is also important to pray along with your teenager at this crucial period of their lives! There is a lot to gain and so much more to lose.

Boys derive power from physical attractiveness, too, but also from athletic accomplishment in certain prescribed sports, from owning beautiful cars and from learning to be cool under pressure. Typically, power games are more physical for adolescent males than females. The bullies literally force their will on those who are weaker.

A Wonderful World of Educational Wooden Toys For Kids

Almost every parent wants their kids to grow up smart and achieve things. They want their children to have what they did not have because parents want a better life for them. That is why as early as the kids are born; some parents try almost everything there is to make their kids smarter. Some try to play classical music; others use educational wooden toys and the likes. There are some researches that proven some of the myths but some remain such.

There is nothing wrong in choosing educational toys over those ordinary toys. In the end, children benefit from all the efforts of the parents because they want what is best for you. Although some may argue that being smart is in the genes. There are also those who claim that smart people worked hard to train their brain to remember vast numbers of information. Practicing and reading tons of things help accustom the mind in absorbing many data. As they say, practice makes perfect. If individuals exert extra effort in educating themselves more and feeding their brain useful information, it is not impossible for them to get smarter.

Educational wooden toys are some of the few toys parents use with that goal of making their kids smarter. They even make their kids drink some medicines and herbs because they heard somewhere that it also helps people retain information better. Nevertheless, before buying or using such products, try to do some research on it. You never know what effects the product does when you start taking it. Just to make sure, ask a health expert on it if it safe to drink. If there are some chemicals that are potentially dangerous, do not attempt to use it.

Educational toys are becoming popular because parents and guardians want the children to benefit from whatever they play with. At an early stage, when children have no problems in information retention, try to teach them as many things as they can. From nursery rhymes, to objects, to cartoon characters or whatever it is that they need to know. Shapes, colors and sizes are also a recommendation. Buying the kids flash cards and some posters with pictures can also help them memorize the things in it.

However, whatever educational wooden toy you prefer to buy, it will surely help your kid in life. There is an edge when individuals are those types that are by the book. Nevertheless, it is also nice to have someone who is a smart aleck. At least they are street smart and have a more practical approach to things. There are also those who can balance both and these are the ones you need to hire. They know what the books say and the theories used yet they can still give you what really needs to be done in real world. The problem sometimes with books is that it does not present the real situation. The authors become too idealistic and forget that the essence of school is to prepare the children for the real world.

Locating Toys For Children That Are Unique

There are several places where individuals can purchase an even larger variety of toys for their children to enjoy playing with. There are specialty toy stores, department stores, discount stores, and not to mention a wide variety of web sites through the Internet.

There are so many toys on the market today that are available for children parents are sure to find that one special toys that is sure to please their child. The only problem that parents may have with all the available toys on the market is trying to determine is which type of toy would please their child. Before purchasing a toy for your child, be sure that the toy will hold the attention of your child and that the toy is what your child would like.

One thing that many parents do that can often be damaging to the child in the long run, and that is purchase every single toy that their child ask for. At times it can be definitely difficult for parents to have to say no to their children, but parents need to know that saying no is perfectly acceptable. Children need to understand that they sometimes they can not get every thing their little hearts desires. I can not tell you how many times I have seen children go into tantrums inside of a store simply because their parents would not purchase what they wanted. Let you child understand that receiving toys is a special occasion that does not necessarily happen every single day, which will help eliminate the children tantrums.

The most unique toys created are made by highly skilled wood carvers that have the capabilities of creating one of a kind toys that children are sure to love for years. These highly skilled wood carvers put their heart and souls into each individual toy that they create. In the least expected places parents are able to find original one of a kind toys, which includes estate sales. Once I climbed the stairs to the attic of my grandparents house and was simply amazed at all the treasures I was able to find that had been hidden away for years upon years. As I opened each box I was amazed at the treasures stored there just waiting to once again be discovered by someone that would once again treasure them as they had been treasured before.

The toys I found were mostly toys that had been made my hand that included cars, trucks, and beautifully hand-made rag dolls. With these toys of olden times children had to allow their imaginations fly to worlds beyond where there was nothing that was impossible for them to complete. These toys were built to last the test of time and the hardest of children for that matter, which is one of many reasons they have become so priceless over the years. I am still not sure exactly whose toys these belong to, but the owner most definitely took pride in them due to the excellent condition they were in.

My Tips to Take Care of a New Dog

So youre bringing home that cute little puppy from the best breeder after doing all that research, or you found the most adorable mutt at the pound, where you were just going to look, you swore. And now you realize that you werent as prepared as you thought. Maybe youre planning in advance for the new bundle of joy. Either way, well give you some valuable tips weve learned over the years of bringing home little bundles of terror I mean joy :)

Learn as much as possible about potty training, and expect none of it to matter, especially when you step in their deposits at 3 a.m. in the pitch black it WILL happen!

Buy the smallest bag of puppy chow you can find. Your dog will hate the first one, and the second one and the third one. Buying small will help you overcome the horror of the money youve just spent on the 7th brand of dog food in 2 weeks.

Strip naked or at the very least to a swimsuit before bathing your dog. You WILL BE WET. No way to avoid it, even in a 2 foot deep sunken bathtub. Personal experience talking here.

Prepare yourself for the fact that the toy you thought was SO COOL in the store, will be sniffed and promptly ignored until the end of time. Your dog will only like the toys that will drive you the most crazy. One of the favorites in our house (NOT purchased by us) is a big skunk with a plastic bottle inside. Inside said plastic bottle is a marble. Aaaaaargh. Nuff said.

That gorgeous dog bed you bought? You know, the one that cost almost as much as the new king size bed you got to accommodate the new dog? Yeah, the dog will rarely, if ever use it. Preferred dog beds in this house? Couches, blankets dragged to the floor, pile of clothes, carpets and of course, our bed, preferably leaving as little room as possible for the humans by stretching as wide as possible.

Training? Whats that? Mine occasionally come when called, and usually sit when told, but thats about it. Ive given up. Did you know that a dog can be flunked out of training school? Neither did I until it happened to ME!

Fill in the blank: my favorite ______ will be chewed to death. Expect it. Embrace it. You will live it.

I think the biggest tip I can give to a new dog owner is to become a firm believer in Murphys Law: whatever can happen usually will and at the worst possible time. Of course, if youd like to avoid my jaded outlook on life with a dog, visit our website, http://www.a1-dog-info.com/tips-to-take-care-of-a-new-dog.htm for more tips to help you survive living with a dog.

Where You Should Let Your Child on the Internet

You need to be very careful with this age of technology. Children are on the internet at all times of the day and are finding their ways to places they should not be allowed. With online pornography simply a click away, you need to ensure that the security settings are right on your computer. In fact you may want to ensure that you don't even go to these websites, because it seems like once you do all sorts of adware will pop up for other sites.

Who's to say that when this happens your child won't be the one sitting in front of the computer screen, and click yes? It's not hard for a child to lie about their age, kids today are not stupid and they can figure out easily what year they need to be born in to allow them access to this once forbidden landscape of debauchery. All it takes is a simple date; these sites don't go and check what else is up with the person who is coming to their site. Hell they don't even care; they just want those people on their website hopefully purchasing a video or something else.

Ok just because you might have to purchase a video doesn't mean that once your child has lied about his age that he's not seeing things that are only intended to be viewed by adult eyes. No in fact as soon as he has hit enter with his or her fake birth date the gates are wide open they will be seeing people unclothed and in acts of well things they just shouldn't be seeing.

Society today seems to have such a lax viewpoint on different things, that when I was little were a big deal. Sex was discussed on TV let alone for a kid to even know what the heck it was. We didn't have computers until around age 12. But even so, the internet was not even something that we went on, heck I can't even tell you the first time I went online, it had to be when I was in my 20's. But nowadays there are kids on the computer from who knows what age. With all these different social sites out there they sign up on, and chat to people who may be older then they even admit.

We've all seen those 48 hour episodes where these older men sit there and hit on a girl who they think is a teen. They even drive to the girl's house to meet her, some bringing alcohol. What the hell is wrong with our society when these men do this, and some don't even seem to be upset about being caught? Are we so corrupt and unmoral?

No we just need to make sure as parents that we are watching what our kids do on the computer and setting the security settings so they can't get on someplace they shouldn't be. In fact just try and stay off those sites yourself, it will be amazing how much of a difference it will make in raising your child.

Bed Wetting Alarm - Why You Need One

Sometimes, the ability to stay dry during the night is delayed for some children; this bed wetting should stop when they reach five or six years of age. If they don't, there are a few things that can be done to end bed wetting.

Have your child start bladder training. This skill enables your child to improve his or her control over the urge to urinate. The main benefit is that it will increases the amount of urine the child's bladder can hold as well as the length of time the child needs in between bathroom breaks.

For night training use a good bed wetting alarm. A bed wetting alarm is a device that is used to treat a child with a bed wetting problem. When the child has a pee, the alarm vibrates or sounds off. Essentially, the alarm is used to train the child to wake up when they are emptying their bladders.

A good bedwetting alarms is a great solution to bedwetting because it causes a behavioural modification in your child. It does this by sounding off or vibrating at the first sign of pee then the child wakes up in time to go to the bathroom and finish what s/he started. The child leans to recognize the signs of needing to toilet in the night and thus avoids bed wetting accidents in future. Remember bedwetting alarms are a healthier alternative to medications.

A motivating reason to buy a modern, proven bedwetting alarms is that the newer alarms on the market today come in bright colors that young children really enjoy and help them take owner-ship of their alarm.

5 Tips For Parents Who Are Contemplating Divorce

Divorce should never be taken lightly and this is especially true when children are involved. Couples should always try to exhaust every possible avenue when contemplating divorce and should only make the decision to separate when it is clear that their differences cannot be resolved and that they cannot find a way to continue living together.

One important point here is that the children should not be brought into the equation at this point. While divorce will clearly have an affect on the children, and steps must be taken to address this, it is rarely sensible to stay together simply because of the children. Children will invariably be far happier growing up with two parents who have separated and made sound provision for the care and upbringing of the children than with two parents who are continuing to live unhappily under the same roof for the sake of the children.

So, having decided that divorce is the only solution, here are five tips to ensure that your children do not suffer any more than is absolutely necessary.

Tip 1. Put the needs of your children above everything else.

The fact that you are throwing off your responsibility towards your spouse does not mean that you can also throw off your responsibility for your children. Your spouse may no longer be your spouse, but you children will always be your children.

When making your plans for the future think very carefully about the needs of your children and what is in their best interest. This then needs to become your own best interest. This is not something that is always easy to do and will often mean that you have to take a good hard look in the mirror and consider carefully whether the plans that you are making for yourself are also the best possible plans for your children.

Your children need to not simple feel but to know that they are of the utmost importance to you and that you are going to take care of them.

Tip 2. Don't be afraid to talk to your children about your divorce.

While you should be careful not to draw your children into the problems that you have with your spouse, or to do anything to undermine your spouse, it is important that your children understand, at least as far as their age and experience will allow, just why you feel that it is necessary to divorce.

Children have very vivid imaginations and if they find themselves with gaps in their picture of what is happening they will fill those gaps from their imagination. In doing so however they will often paint themselves into the picture as the villain of the piece and blame themselves for what is happening.

Tip 3. View your divorce as the start of a new relationship.

Although you are your partner will no longer be living together as husband and wife you will still need to see a great deal of each other and work closely together in looking after your children. For this reason it is vital that you establish a relationship that allows you to do this and which is seen by the children as a loving and supportive relationship.

Although it may not be easy to do so, it is vital that you resolve your differences (or agree to put them to one side) and deal with any emotional issues so that you can sit down and talk through a parenting plan with which you both feel comfortable.

Tip 4. Agree to monitor your parenting plan.

Having agreed upon a parenting plan, it is also important to sit down at regular intervals and review the plan as the children grow older and circumstances change. In particular, you will need to make joint decisions with regard to bringing up your children and provide your children with a consistent approach which does not allow them the opportunity to come between you and manipulate the situation, playing one parent off against the other.

Tip 5. Provide you children with two homes which they can enjoy equally.

It is important that your children grow up feeling loved and appreciated by both parents and should not find themselves in a situation where they feel more comfortable with one parent rather than the other.

Make room in each home for the children with their own toys and space and create an environment is which they can be with either parent and feel equally at home.

These of course are only a few of the many things that you need to consider when it comes to caring for your children through a divorce. Nevertheless, if you follow these tips you will be well on the way to providing your children with the environment they need to cope with the problems of divorce.

Stroller Safety Tips

Strollers are a critical part of family life, therefore strollers safety is an important issue! They make parenting a little bit uncomplicated by allowing parents and caregivers the ability to transport their budding genius easier. They serve as children's 'safe place' especially when the world seems too big for them. For the most, strollers safety are fine but since it is inevitable for every 'tool' to have their own set of perils, knowledge on strollers safety tips is a must.

Below are quick rundown of some safety tips you need to gear yourself to ensure that your kiddo is safe and sound.

1. One safety tip is: don't forget to strap your kid at all times. Doing this is never a hassle especially if you already allow your kid to use one even from the start. Just don't fail to ensure that they are protected enough in a manner that the belt is not too tight that it robs them the ability to breathe properly. The strap works well to hinder the child from climbing out of the stroller and prevent falling especially when it hits a huge rut.
2. Let's go with the next advice, you need to make sure that the stroller that your kid is using is right for his size, the same goes true with the car seat. This tool comes in wide range of sizes and it does not mean that the one that your neighbor testified to be highly economical will also be the right for your precious one. It is easy to spot the wrong kind; the hand can reach those things that should not be, the padding does not rest on place where it must be on the child's body, and the weight is not properly distributed that makes the whole thing unbalanced.
3. Next strollers safety advice is if you have a combo unit which is basically a car seat and a stroller in one, always double check that the latches of the car seat is working properly.
4. Strollers safety also includes making it certain that the brake is correctly installed and is working the right way. You can check the condition of the cables, latches, and the pads as to guarantee that they are all in the right working condition and free from any dirt that may obstruct proper function.
5. Do not fail to check the wheel for possible problems and ensure if they are working as it should be You don't need to be an expert to check out, as long as they are not wobbling too much then they are fine to guarantee the strollers.
6. Check the wheel's tightness; this is crucial for strollers. There are some that contains removable wheels like the jogging baby stroller. You need to double check this aspect before heading off to your destinations.
7. Never attempt to load your stroller with objects that should not be there specially plastics since the kid may be suffocated
8. As you can see, a lot of newer kinds contain many storage areas. Almost all of these storing space are located at the back, don't overload them or you may see your kid tumbling behind and cause trouble on strollers safety.
9. Do not place hot drinks on the stroller since it may accidentally spill over and endanger the future strollers safety.

Printable Word Search for Kids

Word searches (also known as "word search puzzles") are a fun way for kids to pass the time. When kids are bored or a rainy day, or when travelling on a long journey, such as a plane or train trip, word searches can keep your kids busy. However, it would be wrong to regard these puzzles as simply a method of passing time - they can have educational benefits too - these is because in order to solve these puzzles, kids must pay close attention to the words being used and their exact spelling.

If you're not familiar with this type of puzzle, here's how they work:

1. An array of letters, arranged in rows and columns like a grid, is printed on a piece of paper. The array is usually square or rectangular, although sometimes you may encounter other shapes, such as a Christmas Tree shape used for a Christmas themed puzzle.

2. Hidden within the array are various words, each word following a straight line, but at any possible orientation (left to right, right to left, downwards, upwards, or any diagonal direction). The words can also overlap and intersect, and some letters in the array aren't actually part of the words, but are just there to make the player's task harder.

3. The player's task, as the name of the game implies, is to search for, and find these words. The player's should circle each word that they find.

You can of course buy books preprinted with word search puzzles. While some of these books are very good, the disadvantage is of course you can't choose what words should appear in the puzzle. Another idea is to use your computer - with word search maker software, you can easily create your own puzzles - that way you can choose words appropriate for the age level of your children (perhaps even choose the words they need to learn for school spelling), and tailor the puzzles too (for example by avoiding difficult diagonal words if creating puzzles for younger kids).

Visual Support Tips in the Preschool Class

By observing children in many different preschools, I've noticed that the classes which utilize an abundance of visual supports for children have far more independent and secure students. Many children as well as adults perform much better with additional visual cues throughout the day. I know I need my various lists or palm pilot to remind me what I need to accomplish each day or each week. It helps me keep focused on the priorities of my life. There are so many distractions each day to tempt us away from what needs to be accomplished.

This is true of preschoolers as well as they negotiate through the preschool day. Just think of being four years old in a new class with loads of play areas and visual distractions. Not only do you have this sea of fun, you have lots of friends and adults within one room to play with. What a thrill! But then your teacher says, "It's time for circle", and you have to drop what you're doing, pick up and go and sit quietly on the carpet for twenty plus minutes while all the toys and activities are calling out to you to play with them. How do you survive the day??

By utilizing visual supports for the whole class, you assist students in planning and preparing themselves for a period of time. They begin to understand that even though it may be difficult to come to circle, that after circle they'll be able to visit centers, then have snack, then go out to play, etc. They'll learn to organize themselves and have less anxiety about their day. For those who may miss home, they'll be able to see that there's an end in sight after they complete several more activities. It also reduces the amount of repeating directions to children.

Visual support strips are especially helpful to preschool classes which include children with special needs. I suggest to parents to use these techniques at home to assist with bedtime and mealtime routines. Here's a few examples:

Use a classroom visual strip for the morning's activities on a wall where students and teachers can easily refer to it. Each picture should be large enough to be seen from anyplace in the class. One class uses the following sequence for their preschool class: free play, circle, activity centers, snack, read book, recess, home. Teachers refer to the strip as each transition is about to occur.

Individual student strip- Some children with high anxiety or limited language skills may benefit from an individual strip. They can have pictures posted on Velcro to remind them of the activities of the session. After each task/center is completed, they learn to remove the picture and place it in the all done envelope below their strip. A teacher assistant usually guides the child with this plan until the child can independently follow the strip with the cue "Sam, check your chart."

Individual task strips are utilized in certain activities such as fine motor center. For some students to envision completing a fine motor project is overwhelming and may elicit a meltdown. By following the task strip of paint pumpkin, cut out eyes, nose and mouth, and paste parts on pumpkin; the child can complete the project with a minimal amount of assistance.

Visual strips can also be placed in areas where a routine needs to be followed such as sequence to wash hands or use bathroom.

A zigger zagger icon (thunderbolt) is introduced to the children as some unexpected event that may change the expected routine of the day or activity. Maybe outdoor recess needs to be canceled due to an unexpected thunderstorm. Children need to learn that changes may occur that were not planned for and it's OK.

Additional Visual Strategies

1. A list of classroom rules which may use pictures may assist the students.

2. Labels with words or pictures on center areas or bins of toys.

3. Classroom helper chart with a picture of each child and their assigned task for the week.

4. A choice board with a variety of activities (pictures) for students to choose when unable to verbally request one.

5. A song choice board where students can choose a song to sing from a group of songs which have been introduced over the course of several months.

6. Preschool staff may wear a flexible wristband with a variety of picture icons to reinforce what a child needs to do. Some children with delays may respond more appropriately to the picture than the verbal instruction. Teacher verbally states the direction once in combination with the picture and then presents the picture again to reinforce the instruction.

By incorporating visual supports in the preschool classroom, children learn to independently refer to pictures throughout the day to stay organized, reduce anxiety and prepare for the upcoming activities.
